Daniel Wu and Terrance Lau Bond on Set of “Cold War 1994”

With the film set for a May 8 release, director Longman Leung (梁樂民) of Cold War 1994 <寒戰1994>, along with main cast members Daniel Wu (吳彥祖), Terrance Lau (劉俊謙) and Tse Kwan-ho (謝君豪), spoke to Taiwanese media in an interview.

Daniel Wu Enjoys HK Filming Style

Daniel Wu is making his long-awaited return to the Hong Kong film industry after many years. He joked that the reason he had not filmed a Hong Kong movie for so long was not because he did not want to, but because “no one asked me to,” he said with a laugh.

Returning to a familiar Hong Kong film set, he described the experience emotionally as feeling like he had returned to a big family. Unlike the more segmented working style in the United States, he said, “It’s not like in the U.S., where after filming with a director, you may never see them again. Filming in Hong Kong feels the most comfortable. The crew members are all people who grew up with me.”

As for the much-anticipated scene in which fans were hoping to see his physique, Daniel revealed that he did not deliberately train at the gym for it, as he felt that since he was playing a Deputy Commissioner of Police in his 40s, the character should appear as realistic and natural as possible. “I just wanted to show the side of him after he had just taken a shower. I didn’t expect everyone to think of that kind of effect,” he said.

Although Daniel Wu remains an eternal heartthrob in the eyes of fans around the world, at home, he admitted that his “status is rather precarious”. He jokingly said that his daughter does not think he is handsome at all. In fact, whenever his name is mentioned, she even deliberately makes a gagging gesture. This left him amused and helpless as he said, “In her eyes, I’m not the Daniel Wu that you all know,” He also revealed that his daughter’s current favorite is Bang Chan from the K-pop group Stray Kids.

Terrence Lau On Playing Younger Li Wenbin

Terrance Lau, who plays the younger version of OCID superintendent Li Wenbin in the film. Shared that he rewatched the first two films in preparation. The character was previously played by Tony Leung Ka-fai (梁家輝), and Terrance focused on studying the senior actor’s understanding of the role — such as his passion, toughness and emotional depth — rather than simply imitating his outward appearance. “The young Li Wenbin is passionate, tough and values relationships deeply. But at that time, he had not yet become the Deputy Commissioner who fully understood the rules of the political game. That gave me room for creation,” he enthused.

For the role, Terrance deliberately tanned his skin, grew a beard, built muscle, and learned shooting and boxing one to two months in advance. On set, he also built a close rapport with Daniel, who even gifted him a pair of headphones from his own brand as a gift.

Daniel added that his feelings toward Terrance were “very complicated”. “He’s young, handsome and a great actor. I really love him,” he said, clearly expressing the affection and support of a senior actor for a younger colleague.
