Artists Respond to H7N9 Bird Flu Panic in Mainland China

The outbreak of a variant of the bird flu, H7N9, in mainland China is quickly spreading. Five deaths linked to the flu virus have been reported in Shanghai and Zhejiang province as of today. Artists from Hong Kong and Taiwan, who are currently working in mainland, or have plans to work there, keep themselves constantly updated with the news.

Raymond Lam (林峯), Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Angelababy (楊穎), Bernice Liu (廖碧兒), Chapman To (杜汶澤), and Rose Chan (陳嘉桓) shared their prevention strategies.

Raymond revealed that he will use plenty of disinfectant. “Can’t worry much about it. The only way is to wash hands frequently, bring along a disinfectant, and pay close attention to the epidemic changes.”

Bosco, who is also busy working in mainland, said, “I don’t really go outside. For meals, I buy some food and cook it myself.” Is he giving up on poultry? “I avoid it whenever I can! I’m only working until April 10, so I don’t need to return to Hong Kong early on purpose.”

Angelababy has recently arrived in Hengdian to film for a new drama. Angelababy expressed, “I pay close attention to news regarding the bird flu, and take prevention measures. I took vitamins and wear a face mask.”

Filming in mainland for two months already, Bernice expressed, “My family sent me some Hong Kong news reports. Now I’m using disinfectant to wash my hands. I wear a face mask whenever I don’t need to film.” Will she return to Hong Kong early to avoid the bird flu? “I don’t know when the filming will finish yet. I’m returning at once when it’s done!”

Chapman said, “I’ve promised Mani Fok (霍汶希) earlier that I would participate in a charity game show for a television station. The higher we score on the games, the more money the Emperor Foundation will donate. In addition, even the doctors said that eating chicken is not a problem. So I understand that it’s okay to continue eating chicken, just not being called a chicken!”

Rose attended the commemoration of 10 years of SARS in Hong Kong yesterday. “I have a friend in Shanghai who said [the flu] is spreading, and to avoid eating chicken or pork. When buying food, one should go to the supermarket. I don’t have work in mainland China at the moment. I will be careful dining up north; I will bring along canned food if I have to.”

In addition, the cast and crew of TVB’s Super Trio Series <超級遊戲獎門人> will head to Tokyo and Southeast Asia to film in order to avoid the bird flu in mainland China.

    1. ”Just hope no more deaths and its not some radioactive leak cover-up”

  1. Death toll is rising and the reported cases are in different provinces. I hope the mainland government will be able to contain the outbreak and react quickly.

  2. It is not just bird flu outbreak but also swine flu (H1N1)outbreak. In early March, there were reports of thousands of pig carcasses dumped in Huangpu river polluting the drinking water for the Shanghai residents. And a few weeks later, 1000s of duck carcasses were dumped in Nanhe river, Sichuan.

    Unbelievable!

    1. Clamine, the provinces impacted are widely spread. I truly hope the government reacts quickly and efficiently.

Dumping the carcasses in the rivers will only spread the virus to other species.

      1. @ Darren,

If it works, then where is world peace? how come people are still suffering?

    1. ”Praying is no use, Saving lifes is the good cause”

  3. I just hope it won’t get as bad as H1N1 >.<||
Although Malaysia is not badly affected but I still recalled how badly Singapore got affected 🙁
A Singaporean back from HK got infected and her family and friends got infected from her 🙁 🙁
    Many deaths 🙁
    Why CHINA WHYYYY?!!!
    It's always from CHINA!!!!

    1. I am guessing although economically-advanced, they are still behind in terms of civilization; as evidenced by dumping of waste or livestocks in the river? WTF??? A fellow Malaysian here too; praying for the nation to be free from whatever this may be!

      1. Hi Marie ^^v
Hopefully our govt will look into pollution seriously and shut down LYNAS!!!
        Prevention is better than cure!!
Our govt likely be like China, like the Bukit Merah case, lots of death and ppl got cancer only they shut it down!
I think the govt around the world will only take matter seriously when some well-known ppl got affected!!

    2. Correction, FYI, the H1N1 virus is not from China, it started in mexico, and that country is next to the USA.

So, it is not always from China.

  4. Hope it can be handled efficiently, and to contain the virus. :((

The outbreaks are so frequent these days.

  5. There is a lot of flu and pollution in china. Is ridiculous! They should take more care of their environment.
I hope they don’t catch it and hope this is gonna be gone soon

  6. Does h7n9 spread between humans? I hope not, or it will be too hard to contain. 🙁

    1. Most contagions that affect animals can also affect humans. And the opposite is true which is why we test stuff on mice.

  7. Chapman said, “咁我明,可以照食雞,係唔可以叫雞啫!”

So shouldn’t it be, “So I understand that it’s okay to continue eating chicken, just do not go call chicken (hire prostitute)!”
