Zhao Lusi and Xu Kai Rumored to Reunite Onscreen

Rosy Zhao Lusi (趙露思) is reportedly preparing to return to filming in August for the female-led modern drama As Beautiful as You Want <要多美麗就多美麗>, marking her first new production in a year and a half since her return to entertainment and her major comeback last year with Love’s Ambition <許我耀眼>. She is expected to play a plastic surgeon, while Xu Kai (許凱) has been linked to the male lead role.

Onscreen Reunion

The possible pairing has attracted attention because Zhao and Xu previously appeared together in the 2019 Chinese film adaptation of Autumn in My Heart <藍色生死戀>, when both were still relatively unknown. A second collaboration would see them reunite nearly seven years later as two of China’s most prominent stars—a true “meeting again at the top”.

Both actors have also worked with producer Yang Xiaopei (楊曉培). Zhao previously collaborated with her on Who Rules the World <且試天下> and The Last Immortal <神隱> and are said to share a strong professional rapport, while Xu starred in 2021’s Ancient Love Poetry <千古玦塵>.

However, the casting remains uncertain. As the drama is strongly centred on its female protagonist, some netizens question whether Xu Kai would accept a less prominent male role, particularly as he has usually received equal billing in past projects, including Tian Xiwei (田曦薇) in Moonlit Reunion <子夜歸>, Zhou Ye (周也) in A Bowl of Spring <一甌春>, and Esther Yu (虞書欣) in Sword and Fairy <祈今朝>; in addition to collaboration with some of the biggest actresses such as Yang Mi (楊冪) in She and Her Perfect Husband <愛的二八年華>, Yang Zi (楊紫) in Best Choice Ever <承歡記>, and Tan Songyun (譚松韻) in As Beautiful as You <你比星光美麗>.

Drama Synopsis

Adapted from Yi Shu’s novel, the drama follows twin sisters Yang Yipin and Yang Erjing, whose contrasting views on beauty, love and ambition are shaped by a broken family. After facing career struggles and romantic heartbreak, they ultimately discover the value of inner beauty and female independence.
