Chow Chung Passes Away at 92

Best known for his roles in Moonlight Resonance <溏心風暴之家好月圓> and At the Threshold of An Era <創世紀Ⅱ天地有情> over a career spanning over six decades, TVB’s “resident grandpa” Chow Chung (周驄) has passed away from pneumonia.
In 2008, Chow Chung’s portrayal of “Chung Fan Tat,” the devoted and selfless father-in-law in Moonlight Resonance <溏心風暴之家好月圓> left a deep impression on viewers and earned him a spot among the final five nominees for “Best Supporting Actor” at that year’s TVB Anniversary Awards
The respected veteran actor starred as the male lead in his debut film The Mansion of Broken Music <碎琴楼>. In the 1960s, he was a rising star promoted by the Kong Ngee Film Company and appeared in many popular classics, including The Pitiful Daughter, The Dragon Phoenix Sword <龍鳳劍>, and Passionately in Love <癡情兒女>. With his tall stature, refined appearance, and natural, fluid acting, he was deeply loved by audiences. However, as the Cantonese film industry declined, Chow’s career was also derailed. He once switched paths to work as a cinema manager and later held a job in a duty-free store.
In 1998, Chow Chung joined TVB and went on to portray many memorable roles in various television dramas. One standout performance was his portrayal of Yip Hau Kan in At the Threshold of an Era II. In 2008, his role as the devoted grandfather Chung Fan Tat—nicknamed the “Twenty-Four Filial Grandpa”—in Moonlight Resonance left a deep impression on audiences and earned him a spot among the top five finalists for Best Supporting Actor at the TVB Anniversary Awards that year, once again proving his exceptional acting skills. He also appeared in productions such as A Taste of Love <美味情緣>, Wax and Wane <團圓>, Presumed Accidents <純熟意外>, and Daddy Good Deeds <當旺爸爸>. His final television appearance was in Sinister Beings <逆天奇案>.
Chow and his wife, Chan Yee Wah, had three daughters and one son. The couple shared a deep and loving bond. When his wife was diagnosed with cancer, Chow turned down all acting roles to be by her side and care for her wholeheartedly.
In 2016, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Hong Kong’s film and television industry, Chow was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the TVB Anniversary Awards. The award was presented by his close friends Bowie Woo (胡楓) and Kenneth Tsang (曾江), acknowledging his decades of dedication and remarkable achievements.
In March 2020, Chow officially retired from TVB after his contract ended, concluding a performing career that spanned over 60 years. Even after retirement, he continued to live healthily.
