Gigi Yan Proves Her Star Power

Winner of TVB singing competition Stars Academy <聲夢傳奇>, 16-year-old Gigi Yan (炎明熹) released her debut single “Noble Truth” <真話的清高> to critical praise in September. The music video has accumulated 1.3 million views and 33,000 comments on YouTube.

TVB hit the lottery when Gigi belted out her impressive vocals and displayed her star power on on Stars Academy. Taking singing lessons since she was 12, Gigi had already placed in several local singing competitions before signing up for Stars Academy in 2020. Many see Gigi as one of the most promising music talents capable of reviving Cantopop.

Aside from fans, many past contestants of Stars Academy were highly supportive of Gigi’s debut single and shared the song on their Instagram, including Rock Ho (何晉樂), who even sang a couple of verses. Aska Cheung (張馳豪) also said the song was too catchy, and has been playing it non-stop in his car.

Soon after its release, “Noble Truth” topped the music charts and the compliments kept rolling in. A netizen posted, “Thoughts after listening to Gigi’s new song: it’s amazing! Cantopop is making a comeback – it’s been 10 or so years since I’ve heard a Cantonese song like this. Go Gigi! Go Cantonese songs!”

Another posted, “Following someone’s footsteps has a lot of pressure. It’ll eventually become your label, and you’ll just end up living in their shadows. Gigi doesn’t need to be anyone’s successor – she’s capable of starting something completely brand new!”

Another netizen said she has been constantly playing the song on loop for hours, and said Gigi’s song rivals Eason Chan’s (陳奕迅) Exaggerated <浮跨> in level of difficulty.

  1. Ouch to the current veterans of HK music. I like Gigi and think she has a promising start and good voice, but she’s not as good as Gem. Now Gem could’ve given HK music a great revival…if her music company didn’t sh!t on her so bad and if HK industry had supported her more.

    1. It’s not the talent, it’s the structure and how the industry works in HK that’s letting themselves and the singers down.

    2. Agree! How come HK never really supported GEM? was it because of her music company back then?

  3. I didn’t watch the competition nor have I heard of her before but watched her MV just now. The song is catchy and she sang it well… but there’s no way the difficulty is comparable to Eason’s 浮跨, especially for a male singer reaching those high notes. It’s hard to believe she’s 16 though, her voice is more mature than that.

  4. She sounds very nasally, like she’s through her nose to achieve a deeper voice than what her natural voice is capable of.

  5. This girl definitely has very good vocals, especially compared to a lot of other HK artists. I’m actually pleasantly surprised on how they’re handling her career so far- by not giving her a theme song and an actual single and released pretty quickly too.
