Kathy Chow Recalls Toiling Times at TVB

Although Hong Kong actress Kathy Chow (周海媚) has severely reduced her workload in recent years, many continue to remember her fondly from classic dramas such as Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber <倚天屠龍記> and Time Before Time <大鬧廣昌隆>. Recently appearing on  Chinese talk show Starface <名人面對面>, Kathy shared her experiences as a young actress.

Entering TVB at 17 years old, Kathy gave two years to make a name for herself. Due to her beauty and promising talent, Kathy was given hefty roles in classics such as The Feud of Two Brothers <流氓大亨>.

Careful to plan a secure future, Kathy invested in a coffee shop at 23 years old as a backup plan. However, the need never arose, as Kathy continued to enjoy a successful acting career for many years. She remained an iconic face at TVB in the 1980s and 1990s.

Recalling the toiling times while at TVB, Kathy often did not get enough rest. Reprimanding TVB for being stingy and refusing to pay for a stuntman, she frequently put herself at risk to film dangerous action scenes. Fortunately, she was lucky and never got seriously injured.

While filming Time Before Time, Kathy said she nearly had a breakdown. Portraying a ghost in the drama, she had to film many night scenes and filmed in the drenching rain for one week straight. She felt very cold, and the water often ran up her nose and caused a lot of pain. When the crew lost the footage for that scene and notified that Kathy had to refilm all the rain scenes, she felt extremely upset and she nearly had a mental breakdown.

Now semi-retired at 55 years old, Kathy resides in her home in Beijing with several dogs as her companions. On whether she hopes to marry one day, Kathy felt indifferent over her status as finding the right person is more important than marrying the wrong person.
