TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2015: Kristal Tin and Nancy Wu Tie for TV Queen

Regarded as the prelude for the TVB Anniversary Awards, the 2015 TVB Star Awards Malaysia were successfully held on Saturday evening, November 28 at the Arena of Stars in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The show was hosted by Luisa Maria Leitão (黎芷珊), Bob, Jarvis Chow (周奕瑋), and Ashley Chu (朱智賢). Some of the guest performers included FAMA (農夫), Maria Cordero, and Shila Amzah (茜拉).

Captain of Destiny <張保仔> was the night’s biggest winner, raking in Favorite Drama, Favorite Actor, Favorite Theme Song, Favorite Characters, and Most Improved Actor. The night also shocked audiences with Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) and Nancy Wu (胡定欣) tied for Favorite Actress, the first time in TVB’s award-presenting history.

The nominees for the 2015 TVB Star Awards Malaysia were first announced on October 13, 2015. Fans were asked to vote for their favorite stars from October 16 to November 21 on an app that was made exclusively for the ceremony. According to official reports, TVB and Astro received over 300,000 votes throughout the voting period, a 10 percent increase from last year.

Winners were largely determined by popular vote. Audience vote accounted for 70 percent, while the remaining 30 percent came from a professional judging panel.

Ghost of Relativity <鬼同你OT> stars Kristal Tin and Nancy Wu both cried upon receiving their award. The Favorite Actress award is their first TV Queen win in Malaysia, as well as Nancy’s first-ever Best Actress award.

Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), who was not present at the awards ceremony due to filming obligations, won Favorite Actor. A staff member from the organization flew to Okinawa, Japan to present Ruco his award, and the actor filmed his acceptance speech in a video, which was shown at the awards ceremony. This is Ruco’s second TV King award of the year; his last win was from October’s StarHub TVB Awards in Singapore.

The Fixer’s <拆局專家> Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪) and Raising the Bar’s <四個女仔三個BAR> Elaine Yiu (姚子羚) respectively won Favorite Supporting Actor and Favorite Supporting Actress, a first in their career. Tracy Chu (朱千雪) won Most Improved Actress, while Mat Yeung (楊明) won Most Improved Actor. Wu Fung (胡楓) took home the coveted TVB Star Achievement Award.

  1. Omg, what a joke. GoR was a boring series. I like both actresses BUT their characters and actings didn’t shine in the series. This is dumb lol.

Ruco deserved the title but CoD definitely didn’t. The plot was uninspiring and uncaptivating. The characters were a bore. Plotholes were everywhere. It just didn’t make sense or entertaining.

Awards. So rigged and meaningless lol.

    1. @jjwong Agree the plot was rather lame but audience liked it is what matters. This is fave drama not the Oscars.
And i dont understand the need to keep letting kristal and Nancy win in pairs. This is so forced. How can there be a tie out of tens of thousands of votes cast? So rigged!

    2. @jjwong I really liked Captain of Destiny, personally. But I agree that without Ruco, the drama wouldn’t be half as good even with those solid supporting stars.

      1. @isay these awards (esp the TVB) are suppose to be the Emmy equalivant if you think about it. I didn’t think GoR had big noise when it aired. So I question if the audiences were “real,” lol. Yea, without Ruco in CoD, that series would have tank like Titanic…

  2. There’s an error in the 2nd para. COD did not win for Most improved. It won 2 fave character awards -11th prince and Cheung Po Tsai.
The reason for COD’s big win practically boils down to one person -Ruco Chan. All the categories he was nominated in were in Top 3 and won except for fave couple. Congratulations Ruco for a well deserved win! See how the announcement of yr win practically brought the house down even though many of yr fans chose not to go cos you weren’t there.

    1. @isay and @jjwong and @ladykriselle: I really liked COD too…only because of Ruco. He was absolutely brilliant as the 11th Prince….a flawless performance from him. Of coz, his palace costars were good too.
@isay: Ruco won in almost all the categories he was nominated in (except for Fave Couple). Even Fave TVB Enrichment Program “Wellness On the Go 3” won it 3rd time in a row and I dare say Ruco has a hand in this win too. His fans were voting fervently in all the categories he’s nominated. For Fave Couple, this was the only award Edwin Siu won. Priscilla won for Fave Character for her role in “Madam Cutie” so quite strange Edwin didn’t win. So I am a little skeptical on this Fave Couple win by Edwin and Priscilla. Usually diehard fans would be voting for their fave actor/actress in all the categories that they have been nominated.

    1. @funnlim I wonder what’s the probability that they got same amount of votes? We’re talking about votes in the tens of thousands since total votes in astro was reportedly 300,000 .

  3. People kept saying “it was a ****** drama”, Anthony Wong couldn’t stop attacking people on it. Guess what it won my favorite drama. That’s like a slap on the face for those that trashed the show.

  4. This is a shocker. Did they reveal the amount of votes? I mean if it’s only between a professional panel and the number of judges is an even number, that would make the tie easy. But without tens of thousands of votes, the chances of having a tie is very unlikely.

But cheers to them! I couldn’t decide who to bid for either if Liza wasn’t an option.

    1. @ladykriselle This is so obviously rigged. In the Starhub awards the same thing happened- a tie- hence 7 fave female character awards were given out this year instead of the usual 6. No prizes for guessing who tied.

  5. I’m very very happy for Matt Yeung. Finally an acknowledgement for this very capable actor.

    1. @kidd: Yes so glad that Matt won. He has worked and slogged for so long usually as 3rd line actor in TVB. He is from the same acting class as Tavia Yeung and see how much Tavia has achieved compared to Matt.

    1. @yummysukiyaki glad I’m not the only one that felt that way. Yes krystal is a good actress but she kept repeating herself implying that she was going to win for sure. She kept saying oh if i win i’m scared nancy would be unhappy but i don’t want to give it up to her. Like wtf? I understand if she said that at the spur of the moment but she said the same thing in 2 separate interviews. It’s like she thinks she’s the winner and nancy’s just there to get the porkchop award.

  6. Ruco deserved his favourite actor award.
Hoping he gets 3rd one at the TVB awards.

As for favourite actress, it was given that Nancy or kristal would win as Linda Chung’s role in limelight years was not good enough. The surprise was 2 winners.

This will be interesting at the TVB awards, as what result will be.

    1. @mulder99, have to consider that Kristal and Nancy were very much playing themselves whereas Linda played a very different role. My top 3 actresses this year, Kristal, Linda and Kate.

  7. double win for favorite actress? Seem kinda hard to imagine them having the “exact” same vote. Congratulation for Ruco for sure. Happy for Nancy but GOR, was an only Ok drama.

    1. @happybi Most prob the votes is very very similar. So tvb judges panel to even out, and create double winners for the hype. But GoR is really not a good drama. But I am glad Nancy won via GoR, as it’s the only so called lead drama she had for the year rite? I hope TVB promotes her more.

Ruco won it hands down. It’s the most fair awards, tbh.

  8. Speculations:
    – Kristal or Nancy may win due to popularity
    – Linda may win as TVB needs a “1st sister” for image, you can see they paired Linda with Moses in Starhub Singapore and Linda with Wayne in Star Malaysia Awards as the leading couple
    – Kate may win as TVB is coaxing her to renew her contract

  9. i’m so glad that Elaine got her first award! it’s been too long, i’m so proud of her! hope she gets more leading roles in the future

    1. @hkeni: Yeah…I’m happy for Elaine too. Her acting may not be the best but definitely watchable. I actually cried too when she gave her thank you speech. Her tears were just rolling down uncontrollably and so real unlike Kristal…

  10. Nancy is the Astro TV Queen not Kristal, however not to embarrass her as she is also the lead actress they decide to have double Queens hahaha Press releases that Nancy has 23% and Kristal has 12% votes!

Kristal’s fake expression tells all. Nancy is steady, calm and sincere throughout the winning speech. Congrats to Nancy!

  11. kristal again? why vote her in? her acting can’t make it.
i like nancy since triumph in the skies. she is very natural and also in the other drama with bosco.

    1. @janet72 hahaha…TVB want to make them happy only. This kind of award just like carling cup ,mickey mouse award to make some artists happy. And sometimes they need to do it to make them staying with tvb.
Nancy wu standard, act 10 more years also i afraid cant win tv queen in TVB anniversary award la. haha. Dun angry ah nancy.. hehehe

  12. I thought Kristal was good in GOR but after hearing the way she speaks in real life on stage and off, she lacks certain star quality, she lacks emm.. grace maybe so I only voted for Linda and Kate. I would vote for Nancy if it’s for the drama with Bosco, not GOR.
