8 Actors Who Are “Experienced” Cops

The popularity of Hong Kong crime dramas and film have contributed to the success of many actors, and while typecasting is inevitable, one can’t help but to say that they are all pretty good at doing their job.

Ron Ng (吳卓羲)

The former TVB actor is perhaps the most typecast actor within Hong Kong’s television industry. In his nearly two-decade career in television, Ron has played as a police officer in nine television dramas, including the 2008 period drama The Four <四大名捕>, in which Ron played the Song Dynasty constable Cold Blood. It has gotten to the point where a netizen on Facebook actually compiled a timeline of Ron’s various police promotions and demotions in the last 13 years, starting with 2005’s The Academy <學警雄心>. Without his various experiences in different police departments, only time will tell if Ron will ever get “promoted” to commissioner of police!

Andy Lau (劉德華)

Andy has had his fair share of experience in portraying a police officer. Perhaps his best known role is Senior Inspector Lau Kin-ming in the cultural hit Infernal Affairs <無間道>. Convincing in his performance, Andy went ahead to play police officers in films such as Blind Detective <盲探> and Shock Wave <拆彈專家>.

Michael Wong (王敏德)

One of Michael’s very first film roles was in 1985’s City Hero <飛虎奇兵>, in which he played an SDU officer. The film’s box office success led to a string of other successful crime films that gave Michael his iconic image as Hong Kong’s “most ideal onscreen police officer.”

Simon Yam (任達華)

63-year-old Simon Yam has had a versatile and successful acting career, but one of his most well-known roles as playing Sergeant Ho in the 2003 film PTU, a movie that spawned five successful television film sequels.

The charismatic 59-year-old lead actor is almost always a fan favorite when it comes playing cops in crime dramas. His handsome looks and tall figure definitely helps with the image. Michael definitely on the top of the list when it comes to the most charming and attractive TVB actors.

A prolific actor in film, Louis’ has plenty of experience when it comes to playing a cop, including the films Bullets Over Summer <爆裂刑警>, The White Storm <掃毒>, and Paradox <殺破狼‧貪狼>. 1. LOL…reading the title, I thought this was about actors who were once cops in real life…then I took one look at the list of actors and was like, um, okay, guess not…

Not sure what the point was of this article…the reporter who wrote it must’ve been trying to just churn out something to meet quota… 🙂

  2. I need some help @llwy12 , where are you?
There is a veteran Hong Kong actor in his sixties or seventies who played all levels of rank for a police officer in movies ranging from comedies to drama, to action flicks. Just can’t recall his name right now. He anf Nick Cheung Ka Fai are missing from this list. Actually, he was in a comedy with Nick, where Nick had had such bad luck and he play a cop, (what else), in this movie. I would love to catch the name of that movie again as well. These two should be on the list.

    1. @kmfayb You’re probably referring to veteran actor Danny Lee (李修賢)…he’s played so many cop roles over the years that people have taken to calling him Lee Sir in real life. He’s actually not just an actor, he’s also a famous director, scriptwriter, and producer (of alot of HK cop-themed movies of course, lol). In all seriousness though, Danny is actually a very respected actor in the industry, not to mention an award winner (both HKFA and Golden Horse Best Actor). As for the movie where he co-starred with Nick Cheung, I’m actually not 100% sure which one you are referring to, as they were in at least 6 or 7 movies together back during the 80s/90s era. Maybe give me a few more details and I can try to nail down the movie for you?

      1. @llwy12 yes, Danny Lee and Simon Yam, R.I.P would be the ultimate ‘cops, but it is neither. I remember in the movie, Nick Cheung was cursed with such bad luck that not even his family wanted nothing to do with him. In the movie, this scene stands out…….tmmm assassinshere was a police situation and the ‘cop’ I’m referring to was sympathetic and listrning to Nick’s pitiful life story. By the end of the story, Mr Cop and his crew had stepped back and had their shields up. It was a funny scene. I just can’t remember his name right now. I have seen him in countless movies as a cop, that he even exudes that real life cop aura.

  3. Didn’t know 曾守明 passed away. He became so thin its not recognizable.

And ya, if there is a list about police actors, 李修賢 has got to be on it.

    1. @mike Yup, agreed! If we’re talking about actors who played the most cop roles onscreen most convincingly, yet weren’t cops (or had gone through police academy) in real life, Danny Lee and Simon Yam are the 2 penultimate names that HAVE to be on that list. The fact that the above list didn’t even include Danny Lee – well, goes to show how “credible” that list is….which is why I said whoever wrote the article did a crap job…..argh…hate it when media outlets push out articles without doing proper research!

  4. hahaha i thought of ron first. he’s always some kind of enforcement officer, and always the little brother who’s very 衝動. not just tv dramas, even in movies (like the one with andy lau in it) he’s still a policeman lol
