Mag Lam Sings Her Road to Recovery in New EP

Mag Lam (林欣彤) is sharing her road to recovery and enlightenment in her new musical release This Is How We Grow Up <我們都是這樣長大的>, her first EP release. The release comes eight months after her last well-received studio album, Mooooody Me.

“This is my first EP release,” shared Mag. “I’ve been fortunate enough to release full albums since my debut, but I’ve decided to put out a smaller release, because EP’s contain less songs and the material can be more consistent.”

The theme of her new EP is growth. All the songs in the EP are about Mag’s experience through the years, and songs like “Gold Ring” and “Little Flower” are about the difficulties she had to dealt with while she was suffering depression.

Working hard to realize her dream, Mag was not by her grandmother’s side when she was diagnosed with dementia and suffered a stroke. Mag said she felt guilty for abandoning her grandmother, and could not forgive herself. This only worsened her mental instability. She shared these thoughts in her single, “Gold Ring.”

“I should stop chasing my dream,” said Mag. “I should not be so blissful. I should slow down and do worse than her. I really don’t know why I would think that. It was very negative of me, but at the time, I really thought I was staying with her in that way, that I was making up for something.”

In another track “Little Flower”, a song Mag self-wrote and composed herself, Mag details her road to recovery from depression. The song took many years to complete, as she wrote the first half of the song while she was depressed. Though the story of “Little Flower” starts off dark and helpless, Mag said she managed to finish the song after recovering from her struggles. The song ends in a positive note.

“I didn’t want the song to send such a negative message. I told myself that if one day, I could find a way to escape, I would finish the song. I finished the song a few months before the EP was released.”

Looking back at her work, Mag said that “Little Flower” can also describe her relationships with her grandmother: the little flower is Mag herself and the autumn leaf is her grandmother, who once worked hard to survive when it was still on a tree, but when it fell, the leaf became the flower’s energy.”

Asking if Mag will be holding a mini-concert any time soon to celebrate the release of her new EP, Mag admitted, “It’s definitely something I want to do.” Asking if headlining a Hong Kong Coliseum concert is a goal of hers, she laughed and said, “I look forward to that day, but at the moment, I have not set a time on when I should accomplish that. I prefer to take things naturally.”

Mag turned 25 years old on July 21. She said her birthday wish was to stay healthy and youthful for a very long time. “I want to keep the appearance I have now, and most importantly, to stay healthy.”

This Is How We Grow Up was released on June 22.
