Donnie Yen on Filming Action Movies

With the release of Donnie Yen’s (甄子丹) latest action film Raging Fire <怒火>, the actor expressed his feelings about filming action movies and spoke about his career-defining role in Ip Man <葉問>.

Although Donnie thanked his fans for their support of the Ip Man franchise, which spawned four films, he said he is tired of playing the same character in the past 12 years. “The story is done!” Donnie exclaimed that it would be meaningless for him to film any more Ip Man movies.

In contrast, Donnie said he has always been a fan of modern-day action films. However, every time he finishes a production, he would never be fully pleased with the results. “I’m still not satisfied. I haven’t achieved what I wanted to do.”

Having worked with the late director Benny Chan (陳木勝) for the first time in Raging Fire, Donnie said one of his goals was to incorporate his own ideas and thoughts of martial arts into the movie. Donnie expressed, “You have to fight well enough so that the viewers would be like ‘Wow! That looks so real!’ Of course, safety still comes first. Because of this, a lot of action movies go through this complicated process in order to achieve the detailed results that viewers find captivating.”

Starring in Raging Fire alongside Donnie, Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒) said the duo used a lot of different weapons. Although the weapons were props, they were still sharp enough to do damage and there was absolutely no room for mistakes.
