Artistes Neglect Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and Attend China’s Golden Rooster Awards

Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and China’s Golden Rooster Awards both took place on November 23 this year. Due to political tensions, the Chinese film industry banned Mainland filmmakers from entering the Golden Horse Awards and intentionally held the Golden Rooster Awards to coincide on the same day to flex its star power.

This year, there were 19 awards at the Golden Rooster Awards and many of China’s top celebrities attended, including director directors Zhang Yimou (張藝謀) and Chen Kaige (陳凱歌); Chen Daoming (陳道明), Li Bingbing (李冰冰), Wu Jing (吳京), Huang Bo (黃渤), Deng Chao (鄧超), Sun Li (孫儷), Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明), Yao Chen (姚晨), Ma Yili (馬伊琍), Hu Ge (胡歌), Li Yifeng (李易峰), Yang Mi (楊冪), William Chan (陳偉霆), Zhou Dongyu (周冬雨), Zhu Yilong (朱一龍), and Guan Xiaotong (關曉彤).

Among the group of winners, Hong Kong director Dante Lam (林超賢) won Best Director for his movie Operation Red Sea <紅海行動>. He shared on stage, “Every actor and actress used a lot of courage to complete our productions. I am grateful for all the actors, and production team to complete Operation Red Sea. I know a lot of people call me the Devil Director behind my back, and I’m so thankful that regardless of this title, people still work with me.” Dante was astonished to have won the award and sees it as a very prestigious honor.

Wang Jingchun (王景春) and Mei Yong (詠梅)  won Best Actor and Best Actress for So Long, My Son <地久天長>. Both also won top acting awards at the Berlin Film Festival earlier in February. Honored again at the Golden Rooster Awards, Wang Jingchun said, “I didn’t expect the scene from Berlin to repeat itself! I’m very proud to be born in the best time of Chinese films. I hope that the Chinese films will be sunny and that all the love will last forever.”

At the Golden Horse Awards, director Chung Mong Hong (鍾孟宏) won for his film A Sun (陽光普照). Chen Yi Wen (陳以文) won Best Actor for his performance in A Sun, and Yeo Yann Yann (楊雁雁) won for Wet Season (熱帶雨).

Interestingly, Taiwanese artistes Wallace Huo (霍建華), Darren Wang (王大陸), Nana Ouyang (歐陽娜娜), and Rene Liu (劉若英) attended China’s Golden Rooster Awards and chose not to support Taiwan’s most prestigious film awards.
