Charmaine Sheh Wary of String of Similar Roles

Enjoying a popularity surge since her standout role in 2023’s Queen of News <新聞女王>, “Best Actress” winner Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) expressed the traits of an “Iron Lady” perfectly, making viewers love and hate her in equal measure.

Wary of Boring Viewers

While it is proven the actress can more than competently portray the “strong, powerful woman in charge”, Charmaine has professed that she would like to hold off power women roles for the time being, following two consecutive similar roles in Fry Me to the Moon <今天的她們> and The Heir to the Throne <家族榮耀之繼承者>!

Perfectly personifying the domineering news anchor Man Wai Sum (Sister Man) in Queen of News, the actress took on the entrepreneur Liu Qing Ran in Fry Me to the Moon, and in the recently airing The Heir to the Throne, she plays the smart and sophisticated Qiu Hao Er, engulfed in family battles of the wealthy.

Expressing concerns that she can no longer deliver a sense of novelty to viewers, the 48-year-old said in a recent interview with mainland media that she would like to prioritize other scripts and stop taking on “power women” roles as she felt that it would be challenging to have a 180-degree change or breakthrough, even if her various characters would have different hairstyle, fashion sense or background.

    1. Oh, really? I would actually be intrigued to see her take on a similar role as Miao Ruolan (age aside) now that her acting’s advanced well beyond where she was back then and she’s rid herself of that chicken voice.
