Hu Yitian (胡一天) has received a surge in popularity after starring as Hua Wuque in the new wuxia drama Handsome Siblings <绝代双骄>, a new adaptation of the Gu Long (古龙) novel Juedai Shuangjiao. Growing up as a fan of wuxia films, the 26-year-old is grateful for the opportunity of playing a wuxia character, and was prepared to give everything he’s got for the role, even shaving his hairline so his wig could fit better on his head.
Aside from playing Hua Wuque, Yitian also plays the character’s father Jiang Feng. While auditioning for the role, he jokingly said that he scored the role of Hua Wuque by being quiet and soft-spoken. “The producer saw how quiet I was and decided that I’d be a good fit for the character.”
While Yitian did fulfill his dream of being in a wuxia drama, it wasn’t an easy challenge to take on. The show was filmed in the summer, and Yitian had to do high-intensity action scenes while wearing several layers of robes. He had come close to getting a head stroke several times. After filming the show, he lost 5 kg (11 lbs).
Nonetheless, Handsome Siblings did give Yitian many “firsts.” It was his first costume drama and Hua Wuque was his first martial arts role. He rode a horse for the first time, used a spear for the first time, and hung on a wire for the first time.
Yitian debuted through 2017’s Rush to the Dead Summer <夏至未至> and became an instant star after starring in A Love So Beautiful <致我们单纯的小美好> that same year.
Co-starring Yitian in Handsome Siblings is Chen Zheyuan (陈哲远), who plays Jiang Xiaoyu. The drama is also streaming on Netflix.
