Leehom Wang Mistaken as Jaycee Chan in English Newspaper

A newspaper from England wrongly identified Leehom Wang (王力宏) as Jaycee Chan (房祖名), the only son of Jackie Chan (成龍), when reporting about the latter’s arrest in Beijing.

Jaycee, Taiwanese actor Kai Ko (柯震東) and other artistes, were arrested by Mainland Chinese authorities last August for the use and possession of marijuana. At a court hearing held in Beijing on January 9, Jaycee admitted to using marijuana on four occasions with his friends at his Beijing home.

Jaycee was sentenced to six months of prison. Jaycee, who has been held in a Chinese prison since August, will be released on February 14, just in time to celebrate Lunar New Year with his family.

As a result of the court hearing, various international news outlets reported about Jaycee’s arrest and imprisonment. Recently, an English media outlet wrongly published a photo of Leehom and identified him as Jaycee when covering the incident.

Netizens who read the paper quickly uploaded a snapshot of the article online. Many Leehom fans said they felt disgruntled at the newspaper’s mistake.

Others laughed at the mishap, explaining that this was not the first time a western newspaper published a wrong photo of an Asian celebrity. Another international news outlet also mistook Viann Zhang (張馨予) as Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) when reporting about The Empress of China <武媚娘傳奇>.

  1. Such a disgrace!! How could they make such mistakes? They don’t even look identical for christ’s sake!

    1. Yes, just as to us Asians, a lot of Westerners look the same to me too lol..

    2. I agree, to everyone, all black looks similar etc. I hear that all the time.

    3. seriously…to me non-asian people all look the same to me too. i am not surprised that other races are face blind….

    4. @prettysup & @m0m0: Plain excuses. And your sentiments kinda sicken me.

      1. that’s so hypocritical. why don’t you consider your own sentiments sickening?

      2. @msxie
Why should I? Shoddy journalism & historical racism should never be excused. The writers of the piece were so lazy & insensitive, they could not even be bothered to google “Jaycee Chan” to obtain his photos. Putting Leehom Wang’s to a reported crime instead is not just embarrassing but tantamount to slander.

    5. theres an episode in family guy where they point out that everyone in chinatown looks like Jackie Chan… apparently fleshy nose = Asian

  2. LOL, that’s a big insult to Leehom Wang, I’ll say!

  3. Poor leehom he was just doing his own thing and minding his own business then he got dragged into this mess because of the newspaper’s mistake

  4. Jaycee and Leehom don’t really look alike.
Leehom is more talented and better looking ofcourse

  5. Stupid English media. The difference between Jaycee and Leehom is much as between Mr Bean and Hugh Grant. The Asian media will never get this mixed don’t they?

  6. British Press: Dang if we can tell one Chinaman from another. Sure miss those colonial days!

At least white worshipping is still in mode, especially among their women.

    1. LOL! 🙂

Was their writer high on weed when writing the piece?
The least they could do is graciously take ownership and admit the error with a public apology.

  7. This is unacceptable and unprofessional. This is not one person saying it this is a news channel for goodness sake. U would think they do their research first. They don’t seem to care about the news.

  8. Most people coming from Asia are from mostly racially homogenous societies. That is, they don’t see too many white faces, thus, it is understandable if they find it “hard” to differentiate between western faces. Back in the 1950s. That excuse is now tenous because of Western entertainment & media being shoved down their throats on a consistent basis for the last 50 years. Are you saying Brad Pitt looks like Adam Sandler?

Western countries like the States, have multicultural, multi-racial societies & the whites’ve less of an excuse for shoddy journalism & veiled racism.

  9. I don’t understand how you can make this mistake. Can’t you just easily google a picture of Jaycee and get a pic of him ? How on earth did Leehom’s picture even manage to be printed?

    1. Hope someone will point out their careless mix-ups and the editor will have the graciousness to apologize.
