Louisa Mak Was Sexually Harassed as a Teen on Public Transit

In the wake of the sexual misconduct allegations against celebrated film producer Harvey Weinstein, the #MeToo movement has become viral on social media. Many female artistes have stepped forward and spoke up about their unfortunate experiences. To inspire and encourage women to actively learn to protect themselves, 26-year-old Louisa Mak (麥明詩) also stepped forward to share her sexual harassment experiences.

During an episode of the variety show, Young and Restless <後生仔傾吓偈>, the 2015 Miss Hong Kong winner shared that she was sexually harassed twice when she was a teenager. “At the time, I was wearing my school uniform, so I’m not sure if it’s because of some perverted fantasy. It was very crowded at the time and I was cramped face-to-face with a middle-aged man. I didn’t notice anything wrong at first, but after a while, I realized that his hand was trying to lift up my dress. I was really scared. I began to wonder whether I should turn around, but then he would be able to do something else if I had. I was really scared and immediately got off the [train]. When I got on to the elevator, I noticed that someone was pressed up really close to me. I turned around and realized it was the same person [from the train earlier]!”

Louisa’s second experience was on a bus, but she did not go into detail about the incident. She hoped for the audience not to focus on the details of her experience. Instead, she urged women to stay cautious at all times and actively make efforts to protect themselves.

Revealing that she was only 12 years old during the sexual harassment incidents, Louisa felt scared and confused. Since she did not her legal rights at the time, she did not know how to deal with the incidents. “I was very young and didn’t know how to fight back. Although I have the experience now, I don’t really want to talk about it openly. I know it’s very hard to press charges as there is no concrete evidence. He can always say he didn’t do it.”
