Michelle Yeoh Rumored to Attend 2023 Hong Kong Film Awards

Newly minted Oscar Best Actress winner Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) is speculated to make an appearance at the 2023 Hong Kong Film Awards. With the event to be held on Sunday, April 16, Michelle has quietly arrived in Hong Kong.

Seen attending a brand event with Karen Mok (莫文蔚) and Kathy Chow (周汶錡), the actress is said to be a presenter at the HKFA ceremony before returning to Malaysia on April 18 to celebrate her spectacular awarding-winning streak with family and friends.

As Michelle is grateful for the international fame her Hong Kong films brought, the likelihood of her accepting the HKFA invitation is quite high.

Due to the pandemic, the awards ceremony went virtual for the past three years. As this is the first year it is returning to normalcy and will be held in person at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, there is no room for error. Michelle’s appearance would be the icing on the cake and a highlight for Hong Kong’s most prestigious film event.

The frontrunner for Best Actor this year is Sean Lau (劉青雲). It is said that the judging panel has already taken a vote, and Sean won with an overwhelming majority. Many industry peers are in agreement that his role in Detective VS. Sleuths <神探大戰> was difficult. His win at Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild has strengthened this prediction, and public polls also show overwhelming support. If he does win, this will be Sean’s third Best Actor accolade after My Name is Fame <我要成名> and Overheard 3 <竊聽風雲3>.

Best Actress nominations include Teresa Mo for Mama’s Affair <阿媽有咗第二個>; Sylvia Chang for A Light Never Goes Out <燈火闌珊>; Louisa So for The Sparring Partner <正義迴廊>; Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) for Lost Love <流水落花>; and Angela Yuen (袁澧林) for The Narrow Road <窄路微塵>. Sylvia had a strong awards season, including winning Best Actress at the Golden Horse Awards. Angela is a newcomer and is already prepared for defeat against such strong competition, stating that she has absolutely no confidence in winning the award.

It is said that 91-year-old actor Bowie Wu (胡楓) will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement award as recognition for his contributions to the industry. Awards presenters may include Bowie’s former costars, Connie Chan (陳寶珠) and Nancy Sit (薛家燕).

  1. I think there is a typo – there is no way 胡楓 is 70 years old. Maybe he has been in the industry for 70 years, but he has to be 90 or so.
