[Obituary] Mr. Hong Kong Contestant, Fury Wong, Dies from Cancer

Former Mr. Hong Kong contestant Fury Wong (王天就) has passed away from cancer at age thirty. Friends from the entertainment circle attended his memorial service on June 25 and recalled their fondest memories of the multi-talented artiste.

Fury was just 22-years-old when he competed in the 2006 Mr. Hong Kong contest. He failed to place that year despite his fit physique and talent with the cello; the top honor ultimately went to Francois Huynh (黃長發). Although Fury was given minor roles in TVB dramas, he later decided to leave the entertainment industry and found work as a financial consultant.

On his Weibo, he describes himself as a lover of magic and enjoys studying cultures and self improvement. In his Mr. Hong Kong contestant profile, he declared his goal to travel the world and listed Anthony Wong (黃秋生) as his idol. Happily, he had a chance to meet Anthony in person last year. Committed to healthy living, Fury often posted links to health tips and showed off his daily home-cooked meals.

Friend Lee Yee Man (李綺雯) attended the memorial service yesterday and had tears in her eyes when she spoke about Fury. The two developed a close friendship at the Hong Kong ACF, a fellowship that unites local Christian artistes. Yee Man remembers Fury as a giving person who always cooked for others. She expressed shock at his death, saying that although she had known about his illness, many had believed that his condition was improving.

Fellow Mr. Hong Kong contestants, Otto Chan (陳志健) and Kitterick Yiu (姚浩政), also paid their respects. Otto praised Fury for his many talents and shared that the two once founded a charity together. He sadly only found out about Fury’s passing from the media, and lamented that his life was over at such a young age. Kitterick also expressed sadness over Fury’s sudden passing. He described Fury as someone cheerful and talkative, and remembered vividly his cello performance and his head of wavy hair during the Mr. Hong Kong contest.

  1. Don’t understand why so many hongkies have funny english names. Anyhow, rest in peace.

      1. Westerners don’t. Only Hongkongers have weird English names like coffee. All these name really made me FURIous

      2. To wtf, at least I’ve never come acrossed any caucasian has strange names. Only Hongkies often have strange names. Like Fannie, do you know the meaning of this? Coffee? Money? I can’t recall so many but can’t they get some better English names if not just keep their chinese names. That’s okay rather than make ppl laughed at them.

      3. @Bloom

Here is a few for your info.

Zowie Bowie (son of David Bowie)
        Phoenix Rivers (actor)
        Picaboo Street (US Olympic skier)
Apple Martin (daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow)
        Rip Torn (actor)

      4. I do wonder why do HK celebs, or to a larger extend, Chinese celebs, insist on adopting English names. Do they actually think that Hollywood might come calling?

On the contrary, I notice not many Japanese or Korean celebs do that.

      5. @ Terminator: Hongkies has English names because they are used to be UK’s colony and it became tradition. Recently, look like Korean celebs are having English names.

      6. Even Taiwanese and mainland Chinese are following funny English name trend. It’s one thing if westerners adopt funny names, but silly for chinese speaking natives to do the same. The majority of Koreans and Japanese have more pride and don’t use English names.

      7. Thanks Terminator and Alluka,
Yes, I’m fully aware of those hollywood baby’s names. They wanted something special but then again hongkies really give themselves funny names, example kingdom, fanny, power, fury, there are lots more but i honestly cant recall. I understand that some ppl wants to have an english name that stands out or those different from the common ones but we’ve to be careful what we choose because ppl honestly laughed at us.

      8. To Msxie,
I agree with you, I think most chinese dont feel proud of ourselves. I’m not saying all, but a lot, just like I’ve chinese friends her family speaks cantonese and english at home. But she chooses not to speak cantonese but solely english, she didnt want to admit but i feel she’s looking down at herself in a way. Koreans and Japanese are more proud of their own race that’s what I notice.

      9. @Bloom. I agree some Hong Kong people give themselves weird names. But the actress Yuen King Dan calls herself Kingdom because her name really sounds like Kingdom in English. And Mak Cheung Ching is called Evergreen because that’s what’s his name means in English. And some people adopt English names from their Chinese names. Like the Miss HK 2nd Runner up Moon whose Chinese name is Lau Pui Yuet (the last word means Moon).

      10. I do notice that most of Hongkies actors with special English names named themselves in English relevant to their Chinese name. For example Kingdom is similar to King Dan, Evergreen to Cheung Ching, Sire Ma for Ma Sai, etc. Quite interesting if you ask me.

      11. Oh, there was a Miss HK contestant (can’t remember which year) who called herself Hyman. Her Chinese name is Hei-mun, which does sound a little like … That is just plain wrong.

      12. To Late,
Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know Yuen King Tan (King Tan means Kingdom) thanks for that. I only know some like Charmaine – Si Man, Kevin – Ka Wing, these are okay to me.

      13. @ Bloom

To be fair, both the Koreans and the Japanese had never experienced being “subjugated” by Westerners as the Chinese had, especially those in HK. Just as Alluka had referred to, this ‘colonial’ mentality gives rise to a sense admiration and worship of the colonial master.

Coincidentally, Hollywood films still nominate the box offices of China, HK, and Taiwan. But in Japan and Korea, they often are not even in the top 5.

      14. To Terminator
Yes, I agree with you. Some ppl still worship the caucasian. Example in India, indian still worship the whites, they think highly of the whites. Sadly until today there are still a lot of ppl who still think the whites are more superior. Just like if you go for 1st class or business class, asian air stewardess like MH flight example prefer to serve the whites than asian. Why look down on asian and lift up the whites? I guess these ppl think that the whites are rich because they’re on 1st class or business class, but they didint know maybe that most of them are being paid by the company to sit there. These ppl have never seen the whites sweep the floor, wash toilets. It’s sad that asians a lot of times look down on asians. Wonder when can this mentality change?

      15. Definitely nothing worse than a self-hating person. I’ve seen many instances of East Asian (particularly Chinese) people really sucking up to the Westerners, without any merits whatsoever at the expense of their fellow man/woman. Westerners being universally viewed as rich & desirable, has to be the biggest joke of the new Millennium. Just ask Uncle Sam’s & EU’s biggest creditor, China, exactly how bankrupt most Western nations really are in spite of full-time parasitizing of African & Asian countries & printing money. Thankfully that ridiculous sentiment seems to be changing as more mainland Chinese folks visit & reside in Western countries. The illusions of Western liberalism & economic/cultural ‘superiority’ are fast eroding away, showing them up to be hypocritical, dull, predatory, often close-minded & surprisingly, backwards.

    1. Yes, I also wonder about that, eg Myolie, Power

      1. Myolie is named due to the fact that her stepmother is Japanese. That name is inspired by Japanese.

    2. @Bloom – You haven’t really seen funny names, until you check out some Black (those in America) names.
      – Bon’Quisha
      – Sha’Nay Nay
      – La’Quishraniqua
      – Vegina
      – Corvette
      – CharDonay
      – Barkevious
      – Spontaneous
      – Designerae
      – LaPrincia
      – Tremekeus
      – Boomshique
      – Sir’Tavius
      – Tremetrica

      1. Thanks Bunko for sharing.
Yes, I know some ppl have funny names which probably most of us unheard off but not names that you already know the meaning but yet you still name it yourself. I mean if it’s me, I would probably look up for the name before naming it especially if english is not your native. What I was trying to say basically ppl should check before giving some names for themselves to avoid being laughed at.

  2. So sad. Don’t know him but anyone dying so young is sad.

  3. Wonder if he had colon cancer, anal cancer, or liver cancer. May he rest in peace.

  4. Terrible news. He was so young…May he rest in peace! 🙁

  5. It’s very disheartening that a person which such a healthy living lifestyle can die so young. It makes people feel so helpless.

    R.I.P

He sounds like a wonderful person.

  6. So sad to hear a young person die. I’m sure his family is greatly grieved over his death.

  7. This is just so sad. My best friend passed away due to colon cancer at 31. I never heard of him but he sounds like a great person and may he rest in peace. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

  8. 30, so young. He is around my age and it is hurt to see someone who passed away that young. Anyway RIP.

  9. Given the timeline, I won’t be surprised if he died of AIDS. Again, this is my own opinion based on observations. For a person to die this young from cancer, AIDS come to mind.

    1. Why can’t some pass away due to cancer at this age? You can die of cancer at any age. Therefore, what does it have to do with AIDS?

    2. @Andy

EVEN BABIES WHO HAVE HEALTHY PARENTS SOMETIMES DIE OF CANCER. Cancer knows no age limit, no gender, race, religious or social boundaries.

However, I can see your point about observations, and it would not surprise me if his death is indeed HIV or Aids related.

      1. When a person lives a certain lifestyle, anything is possible. There is a saying, you live by the gun, you die by the gun. That proverb is so true. A perfect example is a certain singer who is lying to the world about GAS……when in fact he is HIV positive.

      2. Yes, many seemed not to know about AIDS-related cancers or for that matter, various STDs (Hepatitis B/C, HPV, HTLV, etc) that can cause cancers.

    3. It honestly does not matter how he passed away since he already did. Let’s allow him to rest in peace.

  10. Who the hell was he? While I do feel a slight hint of compassion in regards to his passing in such a young age, but in the end of the day, why did he deserve an orbituary here??

    1. He does because he was once a part of the e circle, although only briefly. It is sort of like, once you enter the e circle, you never truly leave.

  11. To be honest, I’m quite ambivalent about the weird English names that many East Asians give themselves… but hey, surely it can’t be funnier than the silly Chinese or Japanese character tattoos many Westerns have… I mean, c’mon.. can you imagine having words like ‘Luck’ or ‘Rooster’ on the nape of your neck, shoulder or worse? Seriously. Lol

  12. i DO remember him in MR HK 2006. So young! RIP!
