Park Seo Joon Doesn’t Mind Short Screen Time In “The Marvels”

Playing the role of Prince Yan of Aladna in The Marvels, a leader of a musical planet where everyone has to sing to communicate, actor Park Seo Joon is set to give viewers a whole new impression!

While the Parasite actor gained buzz with his debut in the MCU universe, some expressed feeling letdown after watching, with some ridiculing how his screen time was outrageously short at under 3 minutes in the 105-minute film. This was despite “Seo-Jun Park” being pretty high up on the casting list, while widespread Korean press coverage of his Hollywood debut also shaped public impressions that Park’s was at least a supporting role.

Venturing Out of His Comfort Zone
Aware of netizens’ feedback, Park Seo Joon revealed that he had chosen to take part in The Marvels as he wanted to break out of his comfort zone of Korean productions, and experience a whole new filming set as an actor, thus screen time was not the topmost consideration. “I’m genuinely thrilled to be a part of this film,” he said in an interview. The movie’s production crew were reportedly wowed by Park’s strong work ethics, and great attitude towards his craft on set.

Expressing their support, netizens praised the actor for willing to challenge himself regardless, and said that it did not matter if his screen time were three, thirty minutes or 3 hours. Others voiced that the 3 minutes’ screen time was “still acceptable” as Marvel productions were fast-moving and often focused only on fleshing out the story arcs of its leads, thus other characters would not have many scenes, and praised him on taking his first step into Hollywood!

Multi-faceted Explorations through Acting
2023 had been a busy one for the 34-year-old, who had just finished filming Jinny’s Kitchen in February, followed by Netflix drama Dream and disaster-thriller Concrete Utopia in April. In September, he wrapped filming for another Netflix production Gyeongseong Creature, before taking on a slew of endorsement ads and attending fan meets in Philippines and Thailand. His agency said, “Park Seo Joon is always trying to showcase a different side of himself, he will be unveiling multi-faceted sides of an actor in upcoming productions”.

  1. The two pictures side by side is a stark reminder of Asia’s obsession with a milky white complexion.

I’ve not followed K-entertainment much in the last 10 years, but I did like Seo Joon as an actor. If he wants to get out of his comfort zone, perhaps take on an indie film in Europe or the States – something that gives him the TIME to flex his skills. Not pull a Fan Bingbing just so you can get your name in the credits in Hollywood blockbusters.
