Sammul Chan is Always Eager to Increase His Knowledge

Forty-one-year-old Sammul Chan (陳鍵鋒) joined the entertainment industry in 1999. He was heavily promoted alongside Raymond Lam (林峯), Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Kenneth Ma (馬國明), and Lai Lok Yi (黎諾㦤) before leaving to focus on the Chinese market. In 2011, he skyrocketed in popularity and netizens gave him the title of “the most handsome emperor” in Chinese drama Beauty’s Rival in Palace <美人心計>.

Sammul recently shared during a church sermon that he had gone for a full body check in Thailand on his 40th birthday and discovered that his brain was missing an important artery. When he returned to Hong Kong he visited the specialist who determined that it is a hereditary disease with no known cure. “When they looked at the MRI results, they found that an important artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the brain was missing. For this disease, the artery will shrink over time until it has fully disappeared. This is all based on genetics and every patient’s case will be different.”

When he learned of the results, Sammul was very scared and worried of what will happen if the artery breaks. Would he be paralyzed? Who would take care of him and his family? At one point, he prepared for the worst and was searching for a lawyer to help draft his will.

However, after some time he calmed down and analyzed the situation, “This disease does not affect everyday life too much, as long as I am under the care of the doctor I can maintain the current status. Actually, this problem has been a source of motivation for me. Many cancer patients are able to recover; many terminal patients are able to manage and live alongside their disease. While I am still alive, I want to think about how I can encourage the people around me.”

Sammul has always lived life to the fullest. He is known as the “license king” within the entertainment circle. In the beginning, his motivation for learning new things was for work as he did not want to be seen as unprofessional when portraying different characters. Now he encourages others to expand their knowledge.

“There are 24 hours in a day, how much time are you willing to spend in order to improve your life? Through learning, you’ll realize that there are many things that cannot be achieved in one day.” Sammul has licenses in scuba diving, canoeing, sign language, childcare, and many others.

He recently uploaded a picture in which he was attending a CPR course. He shared that he has an addiction to licenses, “The last was when I obtained my BBA in a Digital Marketing course. Now I’m focused on obtaining certification as a scuba diving instructor and in first aid. Due to the recent changes in life, I am also studying theology.”
