Tiffany Tang and Hu Ge Star in Wong Kar Wai’s TV Debut “Blossoms Shanghai”

Upcoming mainland Chinese romance drama Blossoms Shanghai <繁花> is a meaningful one for those involved. Not only is the historical series the TV debut of famed Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai (王家衛), but it is also actress Tiffany Tang’s (唐嫣) comeback drama after childbirth. Additionally, Blossoms Shanghai is the star’s fourth collaboration with good friend Hu Ge (胡歌) – the last one being eight years ago. Although the drama is already in the production stages and no additional information has been announced yet, fans are getting hyped over rumors regarding the series’ synopsis and character costumes.

Set in the 1990s amidst the booming economy, Blossoms Shanghai follows the rags to riches journey of A Bao (played by Hu Ge), who found his way to success as a merchant at Huanghe Road Food Street in Shanghai. It began when he started partnering up with the proprietor of Zhi Zhen Yuan’s proprietor LiLi, with who he initially had conflicts with but they later came around after a series of events. While making great profits and growing their business, A Bao and Li Li found themselves falling for each other. However, A Bao is not only romantically associated with Li Li, but also with other women, including Ling Zi, the owner of a small restaurant who has always supported him, and Miss Wang, a company worker who has a crush on him. During these complicated relationships, A Bao and Li Li are enveloped with trust issues.

Blossoms Shanghai is an adaptation of author Jin Yucheng‘s (金宇澄) award-winning novel “Blossoms.” With a well-received storyline, Kar Wai as the producer and director, Qin Wen (秦雯) as the screenwriter, and Hu Ge as the protagonist, the drama is undoubtedly expected to be a high-level production. Due to the powerhouse production team, many people wondered who would play Hu Ge’s female counterpart, with Maggie Jiang Shuying (江疏影), Ma Yili (马伊琍), and Tiffany’s names mentioned the most.

However, the leaked photos of Tiffany dressed in retro-styled clothing on the filming set answered the big question. According to a source, Hu Ge specifically recommended Tiffany to play the lead role. Furthermore, the staff disclosed that Hu Ge and Tiffany are full of sparks, and the set is always lively because of them. Having known each other for more than 10 years, it is unsurprising that they would mesh well. They previously collaborated on Chinese Paladin 3 <仙剑奇侠传三>, Unbeatable <无懈可击之高手如林>, and Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky <軒轅劍之天之痕>.
