“Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” Wins Big at the Hong Kong Film Festival

The 43rd annual Hong Kong Film Festival was held on April 27 and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In <九龍城寨之圍城> walked home with 9 awards.
Big Winner: Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In
It was an emotional night for the production team of Twilight of the Warriors. Nominated for 14 awards, the film ultimately won Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Make Up Design, Best Action Choreography, Best Sound Design and Best Visual Effects.
During the award acceptance speech John Chong (莊澄) said, “Currently Hong Kong Films are in a difficult period, especially for the younger generation. Don’t give up. Persevere and you will succeed. Let’s go, Hong Kong Film.”
Louis Koo, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the film added, “I don’t want to see the names of new stars at the end of the film. I want to see new stars lead Hong Kong Films to the next level.”
Best Actor: Sean Lau
Sean Lau (劉青雲) won the Best Actor Actor Award for his role in Papa <爸爸>. Based on a true story, the film deals with the emotional aftermath as a father cope with the murder of his wife and daughter perpetuated by his mentally unstable son.
In his speech, Sean quipped, “There are many seniors here today. If you are not here, I would be a senior! Papa made me think I knew a lot of things, but I didn’t know anything. Papa’s director, don’t cry! Thank you to my wife, and especially thank you to dad.”
In addition to Papa granting the Best Actor Award, the Best Supporting Actress Award was won by Jo Koo (劉穎恆) who plays a mother in the film.
Best Actress: Michelle Wai
Michelle Wai (衛詩雅) took home the Best Actress for her role in The Last Dance <破。地獄> where she played a daughter who clashes with her father’s outdated views.
During her speech, Michelle gave her thanks, “Thank you to my family, my parents, and my husband. Thank you for giving me such a safe fortress to pursue my dreams. Thank you to the directors and producers who have used me for so many years. Thank you director Anselm Chan (陳茂賢), you didn’t give up on me when I wanted to give up!”
While The Last Dance did not win the best Film, it won 5 awards out of 18 nominations, including Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Original Film song and Best Original Film Score. Chu Pak Hong (朱栢康) also role Best Supporting Actor in the Film.
