Myolie Wu May Not Renew TVB Contract Next Year?

In the recent years, TVB’s artistes are leaving one after another to work in the more lucrative Mainland Chinese market. After Raymond Lam (林峯) left TVB in August after a 16-year stint, it is rumored that TV Queen Myolie Wu (胡杏兒) will not renew her management contract next year.

As Myolie’s exposure in mainland increased, her filming fee continued to rise. Although heavily featured in TVB’s grand productions, her local pay is meager when compared to her mainland salary. At TVB, she roughly earns $20, 000 HKD per episode, however, she is paid a whopping 150, 000 RMB per episode in China. Earning several million RMB per television drama, it is no wonder Myolie, who has been a loyal TVB artiste for the last 15 years, is eager to leave TVB to have greater freedom over her career direction and concentrate on the Mainland market.

With Myolie’s contract expiring in mid 2015, the 34-year-old star has started building connections with production studios and directors in China. With experience filming several mainland dramas, there are reportedly entertainment companies lined up to sign her.

In response to the rumors, Myolie admitted, “There are companies in Mainland China that have contacted me, but the discussion is still in its early stages. There’s still some time left with TVB, and my relationship with them is still very good!”

  1. What will happen to TVB if all of their artistes were all leaving the station? Might as well join venture with the China TV station.

    1. That’s why they are promoting new stars but I feel TVB is kinda going on a downfall ratings been low and famous stars been leaving.

      1. TVB have some good shows recently, such as Black Heart White Soul, Line Walker , Ghost Dragon of Cold Mountain and also M Club. My confidence is restored. As long as there are good scripts, it does not matter if some of the stars are not renewing management contract, they can still have per series contract.

    1. it’s not really about the freedom, it’s more like the amount they get paid…I mean tvb can allow them to film mainland series every now and then, bu if their pay is really significantly lower than how much they get paid in mainland, then of course artists’ would contemplate in changing over to the bigger market if they do get an offer. And even if it weent for the money, tvb is seriously lacking a lot of main artists’ to work opposite with , all of the current first line artists all have at least worked with each other two times already or something. I think artists’ would get bored or get use to acting opposite xyz artist. There would be nothing new or refreshing to look forward to in order to make a breakthrough :/

  2. without tvb to maintain her profile, she will disappear from the mainland market within a couple of years. at her age and with her looks, she has limited potential. she should do a per series basis contract with tvb and accept any mainland scripts that come her way. look at charmaine. after 2 years on her own, she had to go back.

    1. This I agree, mainland market is very competitive if an artist wants to remain known and popular…there are so many artists’ over there, and soo many audience, someone popular one day could easily become a nobody. Tvb really does maintain their popular imo. Not that they couldnt do it without leaving behind tvb and make it big over in mainland with their acting skills, but the chances of the limelight being stolen from them would be quite high.

  3. Without these awesome tvb artists such as raymond,Myolie, tavia, nancy, priscilla, and much more artists…that such good artists!!!!!!!! What happened to tvb now tvb is all of the artists don’t even know how to act????(just saying) 😉

    1. Priscilla as Priscilla Wong? And Priscilla as an awesome actress? Oh no.

      1. Both of those new comers suck. I don’t Priscilla becaUSE HER ACTING IS TERRIBLE AND SHE STARTED AS 1ST LEAD FEMALE WITHOUT PLAYING EXTRA OR EVEN SUPPORTING CAST ROLES FIRST.

      2. You are comparing a newbie with an actress with few years of experience? Well, it’s such a fair comparison. Priscilla has experiences in other station before joining TVB and she still does terribly.

      3. Once i find out priscilla wong is in the drama, i dont bother watching it. Rebecca zhu only has the looks but cant act. I watched Always and Ever because of the main stars Esther and Bobby. She was never the reason i watched that drama.

  4. lower pay, long long hours, and most importantly horrible low production shows with no creativity…tvb series have been garbage for like 10 years now, and in past 5 its been unwatchable

every1 is leaving, the only reason most dont is because its like the only place to work if u want to be a tv

    1. “and in past 5 its been unwatchable “

      These are unwatchable dramas?

      – Inbound Troubles
      – Brother’s Keeper
      – Bounty Lady
      – Triumph in the Skies II
      – Karma Rider
      – Reality Check
      – When Heaven Burns
      – Black Heart White Soul
      – Storm in a Cocoon
      – Ruse of Engagement
      – Bottled Passion
      – Ghetto Justice
      – The Other Truth

Through out the 10 or 5 years, there are always dramas that got praises from audience, usually come with comments like ‘it’s a breath a fresh air’, ‘it’s a long time since TVB produce such a good drama’.

But, right after the series ended, the complaints about ‘all TVB series are craps nowadays’ come about again.

Strange. People seem to view back dramas in the 90s and 80s with rose-tinted glasses while seeing this decade’s dramas with dirt-tinted glasses.

      1. I agree with you. I don’t find the 80s/90s dramas all that good as some people here want us to believe. I find them kind of long-winded and the props tacky. As in post 2000s, there were good dramas and bad in the 80s/90s. In fact I stopped watching dramas in the 90s cos i got bored. I only started watching again in the past few years and even now, i watch selectively, mostly if the cast appeals to me. For those that the cast doesn’t appeal to me, I’ll try watching episodes here and there as and when i have time and sometimes, i do get pleasant surprises.

      2. the difference is that in the 80/90/ties there are 7/8 out of 12 series/year were good to watch. but now maybe 3/4 out of 12 series/year are really good in my opinion.but i think in the coming period tvb will make better series again, just start with line walker is my favourite serie since long time.

      3. @omg:  No need for people to “tell” you whether the 80s/90s series are good or not – go watch for yourself, then pass judgment.  Of course, not every series is good and not every series is bad – there will be a mix of both no matter which generation’s series you watch.   However, without a doubt, the caliber of the acting back in the old days was way way better than nowadays – the amount of talent that TVB had back then (both in terms of artists as well as behind-the-scenes people such as producers, scriptwriters, directors, etc.) was unmatched and help to build up TVB to be the ‘giant’ it is today.

Though I wouldn’t go so far as to say that all the series from the past 10 years were ‘garbage’ (that’s way far from the truth, as there were quite a few series the past 10 years that I would consider ‘gems’ and are definitely on my ‘favorites’ list) – however the undeniable truth is that TVB’s series have been going downhill for a long time already.  Like kolo pointed out, the ratio of good series to bad series is way lower nowadays than it was back in the ‘golden years’ of the 80s/90s (though my numbers are significantly lower – I would say back in the 80s/90s and even 70s to some extent, about 7 out of 10 series were ‘good’ while in the past 15 years or so, the ratio has been more like 2 to 3 series out of 10).

Oh and just because we keep praising the series from the 80s/90s, doesn’t mean that 1) all series from back then were good (I would use the word “most” rather than “all”) and 2)  everything was all rosy / peachy back then.  Anyone familiar with TVB from back in the day will remember that the artists at that time endured many of the same ‘hardships’ as the artists today do (low wages, long hours, lack of freedom, politics and favoritism, etc. etc. — those are things that will never change at TVB, no matter what era we’re in).   It’s just that back then, there was such an overflow of talent and good quality productions that those ‘hardships’ were less ‘emphasized’ (nowadays, the Media seems to not have much to report on when it comes to TVB, so they focus on all the negative stuff to build up discussion).  Plus the mentality was different back then as well – the focus was more on team work and team spirit where everyone was willing to help each other out and learn from each other – and most importantly, there was a sense of respect and appreciation for each other (amongst the artists, behind-the-scenes people, and even management).

The biggest problem is that TVB is regressing instead of taking steps forward…that’s truly what the management need to recognize and fix…

      4. There are many 80s/90s series airing on a local channel in my place. Honestly, the 80s series are not that good. Some are really good and they are called classic series, but the rest are only so-so.

The 90s series are better in my opinion. Recent years, TVB has some good series but the plot is still their biggest trouble. Even in a good series, there are a lot of plot holes. And I think the main reason for them to lose popularity is their stubborness. They keep the same color, same studio, same clothes for years. The color of current TVB series is same to 15-20 years ago. Look at the Chinese series, the color and the outfit are way better.

      5. Yup, they don’t make them like they use to. Nowadays it’s about green. In this new generation, it’s made to throw away and not repairable. 😀 🙁 LOL!

      6. @llwy12, there’s really no need to adopt such a hostile tone to try to get your point across. I wonder why you’re so riled up. I didn’t say that the old dramas were crap. I acknowledged that there were good dramas as well as bad. Surely you don’t expect me to dig up all the old series and watch them. I don’t have that much time. I’ve watched enough 80s and early 90 series to arrive at my conclusion, thank you for your suggestion. In truth, i lost interest in tvb dramas in the 90s cos i found them boring and stale with the same themes repeated ad nauseum. Pls respect other people’s opinion. You’re entitled to your own opinion. I won’t say you’re wrong either.

      7. It’s called nostalgia and apoeals to the older folks 🙂
Reminds me of my parents who always go on and on about good old days.

      8. what i really miss is a good wuxia drama from tvb, their recently broadcasted wuxia drama GDHM was a disappointment, its not really about wuxia. wuxia drama’s has always been tvb’s ratings puller in the past days, think about the many classics they had made in the 80s and 90s even some 00’s was good.so i dont understand why they have left this genre.

      9. @kolo

I think the left our wuxia because they’re as popular as they used to be in the 80s/90s. I remember the rating of ‘Lethal Weapon of Love and Passion’ was quite low for its time.

      10. @kolo

I think they left out wuxia because this genre is not as popular as they used to be in the 80s/90s. I remember the rating of ‘Lethal Weapon of Love and Passion’ was quite low for its time.

      11. @Kidd: I hope you’re kidding when you added When Heaven Burns in your list above. That was probably one of THE MOST UNWATCHABLE dramas ever. Everything about it was nauseating, from Charmaine’s haircut, monotone voice and pretentious poses to the horribly fake and shiny tattoo on Moses’ back to the horrible song at the end of every episode sung by Bowie, Moses, and the other dude to the horrible acting and boring story line. The list goes on. And let’s not even talk about Triumph in the Skies I/II…there’s not enough space in the world to talk about everything that was bad about them.

      12. I think it is very hard for TVB to compete with Mainland China in filming wuxia drama series for the following reasons:

        1. High budget required – travelling and living expenses of TVB artistes and production crew to film in China.
        2. TVB can get sponsors for artistes’ clothing but not or ancient costumes. Costume expenses will make the already high budget higher
        3. It takes a long time to get a permit from the Chinese Government to film wuxia drama series in China
        4. Limited spots with easy access are available to people outside of China
        5. Availability of TVB artistes who are good in martial arts and kung-fun
        6. Availability of martial arts directors in TVB
        7. Limited markets

As a result, TVB prefers to stay away from filming wuxia drama series. If TVB wants to film a compatible wuxia drama series, it will cost them a lot more than a modern drama series.

      13. Every decade there’s the same sentiment. 70s think 60s the best, 90s think 80s the best, etc etc.

        Kidd, what a list. Let’s see…

        – Rosy Business – YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!
        – Inbound Troubles – YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!
        – Brother’s Keeper – BLAH!
        – Bounty Lady- YEAH!
        – Triumph in the Skies II – BLAH!
        – Karma Rider – Didn’t watch but themesong – YEAH!
        – Reality Check – YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!
        – When Heaven Burns – BLAH! for me
        – Black Heart White Soul – YEAH!
        – Storm in a Cocoon – YEAH!- YEAH!
        – Ruse of Engagement- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!
        – Bottled Passion- YEAH!
        – Ghetto Justice- YEAH!
        – The Other Truth- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!
        – River of Wine- YEAH!- YEAH!
        – No Regrets- YEAH!
        – Gun Metal Grey- YEAH!
        – A Fistful of Stances- YEAH!
        – Never Dance Alone- YEAH!- YEAH!- YEAH!

And a whole lot more! I will even say 3 Kingdoms RPG for better or for worse was a – YEAH! for me.

Wow The other Truth is within 5 years? Felt like ages ago!

      14. TVB is staying away from wuxia because the best wuxia writer right now is refusing to give them the rights to adapt whilst there are other wuxia options they simply refuse to make. But if they do, TVB for me makes the best wuxia on a smaller budget but more intimate. China makes terrible wuxia. Look at all the screw ups.

      15. It’s a matter of personal taste. BK for me is YEAH!YEAH!YEAH!YEAH! out of 5 YEAHS. Minus one for the boring Macau storyline.

      16. No matter how much people disliked watching “When Heaven Burns”, it won the best drama series award in TVB’s 2012 Anniversary Awards Ceremony, and it was one of my favourite drama series.

“When Heaven Burns” was good in acting, scenes, music, theme songs, and photography. It would be perfect if the storyline didn’t start with the pretext of cannibalism. It was also one of Charmaine Sheh’s best drama series.

  5. With another Tvb star leaving, TVB will be in shackles….

They need better offers and times. Without all the top stars, they only have actresses with limited Chinese or bad acting skills…

  6. That’s the fate of all HK (TVB) artists. It’s well known that TVB can’t offer really high wages compared to mainland companies.

We need more HK TV Channels, where are the other new TV stations that have got their TV licence almost a year ago. It seems there is still no news about their broadcasting date. Besides HKTV (that has not got a TV license), it seems the new TV stations are not highly active in producing TV series. That’s quite a shame. Perhaps they are dubbing foreign TV series and focus on TV shows.

    1. They are preparing? As far as I know, NowTV is going to have their own series to be on TV in the end of this year.

      1. Hi Alluka. I love the 80s and 90s drama series. Where are you getting these classics. In Hong Kong or Taiwan. Please tell me. I want to find that channel like yesterday

    2. @Jason:  The other stations haven’t done anything because technically they don’t have their licenses yet (and won’t have them any time soon).  Remember that the government granted those licenses “in principle” – which basically means that their applications were approved, but they don’t have the licenses in hand (which means they can’t “open up shop” so to speak).  And don’t count on them getting those licenses anytime soon because there have been a few judicial reviews launched (by HKTV as well as others) challenging the government’s decision – when legal proceedings are going on, everything is pretty much on hold….the government can’t issue the licenses until all legal proceedings are over.  Seeing how long the other judicial reviews involving the license issue took, this could very well drag on for years….

Oh and don’t forget another very important ‘bargaining chip’ looming on the horizon – the decision on license renewal for TVB and ATV, which will come before the end of the year (their licenses don’t expire until November 2015, but the government has to make a decision at least a year before).  Depending on what type of decision is made there, it could very well shake things up in the HK television industry and have an impact on how the playing field is laid out the next couple of years.

      1. hk government should withdraw the license from atv and give it to hktv. its a joke for a tv channel to broadcast old drama’s again and again without any new drama.

  7. Salary and perks are usually the deciding factors. TVB used to monopoly those days, gone were the good old days. With mainland markets booming like nobody’s business, everyone with demand will surely sign up with mainland stations, you get more money, the perks are better, and most importantly you get more rest time. Maybe it’s a little too exaggerating if I were to write working 2 years in mainland china is equivalent to working for 5 yrs in Hong Kong in terms of money.

  8. Those hong kong artistes that not in demand in mainland china have no choice but to work for tvb. Else if they have some stations from mainland china tries to lure them, I’m very sure they would definitely take up the offer. Most ppl want to make more money don’t we?

  9. All the best Myolie! Tho i want u to stay with TVB but will support u wherever u go! Fighting!

  10. this is just great all the old veterans are leaving and heading to mainland and promoting noobs which dont have the experience to carry the main lead Arrggghhh its gonna be a pain sore for my eyes for the future series

  11. Smart girl. She won’t be able to spread her wings if she remains with TVB.

  12. Maybe she will film something in China and then TVB. Well, she has the demand there. However, her age is a disadvantage.

  13. Seriously, I don’t get why so many of them are eager to go over to Mainland. Yes, they pay more. Yes, you have more freedom. Yes, it’s a bigger market. BUT most of mainland dramas can’t even make it, actors are woody, don’t even get me started on the plot. & most of them can’t even speak accurate mandarin, have someone to dub their voices in the drama is such a turn-off to watch. I’ve since stopped watching Kevin Cheng when he uses dubbed voice. It’s just weird, & I rather not.

    1. As a matter of fact, Kevin Cheng speaks very good Mandarin as he lived in Taiwan for a number of years, and he made an effort to learn proper Mandarin.

It is a practice in China to have all artistes’ voices dubbed in drama series even if he/she is a Mainland Chinese artiste who speaks good Mandarin.

    2. I also don’t like dubbing unless the artistes cannot speak proper Mandarin. You don’t feel the same with a dubbed voice.

    3. Yup, never like mainland series- there’s always something very wrong 🙁

    4. Me too. Since Kevin started filming in China, i stopped watching his dramas. Used to like him in TVB dramas. It’ll be good to see him back in Sky Eye with Ruco. 2 of my fave actors together (but Ruco has an edge heehee).

      1. I am hoping that Ruco has an edge over Kevin but it doesnt seem to be so. The media gives greater prominence to Kevin and Tavia. Looks like Ruco is a supporting acror in Eye In The Sky. (:

  14. tvb will make you famous but the pay will not be much..i guess once you have stamped your name in the industry and pretty much tried almost every role, it’s time to move on

  15. I have to get my peeps in England, all over England to tell me where this ‘local’ channel is that is showing all these eighties and nineties HK dramas cause someone refuses to say. I do know of a HK channel that shows a lot of eighties and nineties dramas though, hahahaha.

  16. Although she will have many opportunities in China, and will get paid a lot, I don’t like Mainland dramas though, I will be very sad if she does leave she’s my favourite TVB actress!
