Will “Life After Death” Be Priscilla Wong’s Biggest Comeback?

TVB’s Life After Death <那些我愛過的人>, which premieres Monday, is highly anticipated for several reasons: it doesn’t have a typical TVB cast, it is produced by My Unfair Lady’s <不懂撒嬌的女人> Kwan Shu-ming (關樹明), and it stars Frankie Lam (林文龍), who is now the vice president of TVB’s once rival, ATV. Another striking feature is that the drama is Priscilla Wong’s (黃翠如) first Hong Kong comeback in three years—her last TVB drama that aired locally was 2017’s Heart and Greed <溏心風暴3>.

Life After Death is a romance-driven story that centers on a vehicle accident. Similar slice-of-life romance series tend to win over the public’s affection, much like Kwan’s last series My Unfair Lady, and the more recent Wonder Women <多功能老婆>.

In addition to its genre, the refreshing supporting cast—Mark Ma (馬貫東), Shiga Lin (連詩雅), Chloe So (蘇皓兒), Kyle Li (李任燊), and Zeno Koo (顧定軒)—adds more diversity to the otherwise stagnant regulars of TVB dramas. Life After Death is Mark’s first major role apart from Lo and Behold <·回家之開心速遞>. Both Kyle and Zeno are film actors. Life After Death is Chloe’s first TVB drama.

Another interesting point is Priscilla Wong, who has been conspicuously absent from the TVB Anniversary Award predictions since 2016’s Two Steps From Heaven <幕後玩家>. If all the cards are played right, Life After Death could be the drama that will put Priscilla back in the running for TV Queen this year.

  1. Two leads that can’t act to save their own life. Frankie is the worst culprit of the two, stone face acting in the industry for over 30 years and is now in an executive management role with ATV, but films for their rival TVB and not even in a bigger budget Shaw Brothers production. Sad.

  2. Not the biggest fan of Priscilla’s acting, doubt she has improved.. the supporting cast looks pretty refreshing though!

  3. I like Frankie Lam. Haven’t seen him in drama in a while. However, I don’t find Priscilla good at acting. If anything, I find her annoying to watch. She has a long way to go before getting best actress award.

  4. PW’s acting is the same in every drama. doubt that even with the best supporting cast, plot, and director could save her bad acting.

  5. Forgot to mentioned Line Walker 2 for her. Lol. I don’t really remember she’s in Heart of Greed 3 too many dramas to keep up with.

  6. Watched the premiere and so far so good! I love the cinematography from this producer, way better than the colour tones that TVB usually uses. Also it’s been a while since TVB aired something that is character-driven.

As for Priscilla, y’all haterz gonna hate. She doesn’t have the best voice but her characterization and emotions tend to be on point. This drama is definitely gonna be the breakthrough for Mark Ma. And can I mention WHYYY is Griselda Yeung always acting as “the wife”, whether ex, or dead, or widowed. She deserves more screen time with a stronger character.

    1. @bubbles23 i agree with everything you said. The cinematography is nice. Priscilla really shines on emotional roles. I already know this drama will be a breakthrough for Mark Ma. And Griselda def needs different roles. She’s a good actress

I agree. Priscilla has a weak voice but is good in emotional torn love story type roles. She demonstrated this in ‘Swipe Tap Love’. She is definitely one of the more likeable actresses…

  7. I really like Priscilla and am a big fan of her through watching her travel shows with Tony. But I can’t say the same about her acting. I watched episode 1 last night and while I have never seen Shiga Lin act before, I found her and the other male lead from Come Home Love (forgot his name) very easy and natural to watch. I see some improvement in Priscilla’s acting but I think she really needs to work on her tone of voice. The way she delivers her lines is not very strong, which may borderline be okay for emotionally distraught roles. But for her next role as an attorney, I hope she works on speaking with conviction. And if she is able to achieve that, use the same strong voice for her future roles. Tony kind of has the same problem as her too. But his pronunciation has more lazy tones. I also wish her husband, Edwin, would give her more constructive pointers towards her facial expressions. Her upset look is always wide teary eyes, open mouth crying face. And her comedy roles, she always purse her lips together. Her acting bothers me quite a bit. But I enjoy this series’ storyline so far so will try to keep watching it. And I agree with the other comments here about Griselda. Wish she’d get more versatile roles rather than the same crying wife. She deserves more. Hopefully this drama continues to be interesting to watch!
