Virginia Lau Finally Finds Breakout Role

For as long as Virginia Lau (劉溫馨) could remember, she’s always dreamed of being an actress. It all started with the very popular My Fair Princess <還珠格格>.

“I grew up watching the show,” said the 30-year-old. “That show made me want to be an actor, and that dream never stopped.”

Virginia remembered writing an essay about her dream while in elementary school. “I wrote that I wanted to be an actor,” she said. “I didn’t think that dream would come true, but I’m also surprised at how ambitious I was. Nothing stopped me!”

Fortunately, Virginia has a supportive family. When she was 10 years old, her grandmother enrolled her in modeling classes. After high school, she successfully enrolled into the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. She was also chosen to be part of the Olympic torch relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

But even after so many glorious opportunities, Virginia still decided to focus her career in Hong Kong. Her debut year was 2013, after coming in fourth at the 2013 Miss Hong Kong Pageant.

On why she didn’t decide to stay in China for an acting career, she said, “I didn’t want to lose the opportunity. I really had a lot of confidence in myself at the time. When they announced the results, I was disappointed.”

Seven years later, after swimming in supporting roles, Virginia finally got casted in her meatiest role yet—playing a TV producer and Roger Kwok’s (郭晉安) ex-wife in the upcoming Big White Duel 2 <白色強人II>.

“It’s a powerful role,” she said. “I’ll be working alongside TV Kings and Queens. I have to be fully prepared. Nancy Wu (胡定欣) and I have a lot of scenes where we oppose each other. When the camera’s on, we don’t talk, but once it goes off, we start talking a storm. It’s really hard to stay in character sometimes!”

  1. I have no idea who she is but glad to hear she actually graduated from acting school. I was watching 2018 “I am the actor” and was so impressed with the Chinese actors and their acting backgrounds.
