Alex To’s New Mandarin Album “We Are Young”

Alex To (杜德偉) is making a come back after nearly ten years. The 51-year-old singer is set to release an all-new Mandarin album We Are Young <好樣>. Alex released the music video of the album’s lead single “Why Don’t You Let Go” <妳值得> yesterday.

Alex made his music debut in 1985 after winning first place in the New Talent Singing Awards. He has released numerous albums since then, and is known for his good looks and western-influenced music. In late 2002, Alex was caught carrying a small amount of marijuana. He was later charged with possession and was fined. Although a relatively minor event, the news negatively affected Alex’s career. Since the incident, Alex has retreated from Hong Kong and focused solely on the Taiwan market. Aside from 2004’s Take Off <脫掉>, Alex did not release any new music, although his former label Capital Artists continues to publish various best-of selections during his hiatus.

In November 2012, Alex married photographer girlfriend Ice Lee (李曉冰). It turns out he was already preparing for the new album at the time. During their honeymoon, Alex asked his wife to take photos for his album jacket. He was also personally involved in the project, serving as producer and creative director. He has prepared over 40 outfits to be used for promotional tours, and has even designed his own hair and makeup.

The music video for the album’s first single “Why Don’t You Let Go” was released on Rock Records’ YouTube channel on August 14. Set against a backdrop of a ticking clock, Alex showed off his dancing skills with a flawless performance alongside his background dancers. The song is a R&B-infused ballad, a message to a woman suffering from memories of a broken romance. Alex urges her to let go of the past and continue to have faith in love.

We Are Young boasts ten original songs plus one remix. Alex hopes to share the lessons on family, love, and friendship he had learned during the past ten years. While generally a pop album, fans may find hints of blues and jazz scattered across the tracks. The album is currently available for pre-order and will be released on August 30.

  1. i wanna take that jean jacket in the MV and burn it.

Love his suit look. He’s still good … I like the smoothness in his voice. Not sure if he’s any good live but I am not attending a concert – so this is good for me!

  2. Excuse me but we are young? At 51, not really anything he shoould be related to.

  3. He looks great for his age.

No offense, I thought he retired or something. There was a longest of time I thought he was a gigolo you know? Or rather kept “mistress” of rich women? Well, he has certainly “retired” for sure. Anyway can anyone still remember he dated Sandra Ng? Wow, like DECADES ago.

Anyway I read his wife is exactly half his age?

    1. YUP, compares to that film king Francis Ng, I think this Alex To just looks great and fit for his age. He just still looks great overrall you know. Yes, the wife is practically 1/2 his age w/that article you guys had a while ago and her mother is only one year YOUNGER than this Alex To. That’s kind of funny i mean so he’s actually one year older than his mother in law. HAHA LOL…

    2. Not long ago I watched a drama with him in it. The name is Die Sterntaler,a Taiwan remake of a JDrama, Hoshi No Kinka . In the drama…he is paired with a much matured older woman and I got totally turn off, or rather disgusted at their uhmm interactions at bed?sorry for being blunt. Maybe the storyline requires them to. haha

Ya I read too…his inlaw is almost his age..practically what windy has said

    3. Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard much about Alex To (though I did read about both his mother and father passing away in recent years).  He’s actually not a bad singer at all, it’s just that his style of music is different from what Hong Kongers are used to….his dancing is still pretty good though and he still looks really good for his age.  I actually like quite a few of his songs from the 80s….

@Funn – haha…believe it or not, I actually do remember the time when he dated Sandra Ng (which was one of the biggest shockers to me back then) – unlike other ex-celebrity couples though, at least Alex and Sandra are still really good friends.

@Shrimpboat:  Yup, I saw that performance as well…he wasn’t that bad, but it goes to show that he probably hadn’t been keeping up with his music and dancing.  In any case though, it was fun seeing Alex and Sally perform their ‘Believe in Yourself’ duet again….brought back great memories of the old days!

  4. I remember seeing him at Sally’s recent concert. He sang one song with her, but was out of breath way before she was (and this is near the end of the concert so she’s been singing for a good amount of time).
