New MVs: Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai, and Khalil Fong

This week’s music video roundup at JayneStars features the new ballads from the pop legends, Jay Chou (周杰倫), Jolin Tsai (蔡依林), and Khalil Fong (方大同). Filmed in major historical centers of Edinburgh, Scotland, Jay Chou presents a hint of quaintness in the MV of “Ming Ming Jiu.” Jolin Tsai’s “I” is self-reflective as she asks herself, “Who is the real me?” Finally, Khalil Fong sticks with his usual R&B grove with the catchy “Love Instantly”.

Jay Chou – “Ming Ming Jiu” <明明就>

Jay Chou glamorizes the MV with scenes of him walking alone around the gorgeous castle settings of Edinburgh, Scotland. As usual, Jay teams up with his partner, Vincent Fang (方文山), to write the piano acoustic ballad. It has been said that before Vincent could get around writing down the lyrics, Jay already filmed half of the MV in Edinburgh. Jay sent the tapes to Vincent, who, inspired by the lavish castle scenes, managed to compose the lyrics in a matter of days. “Ming Ming Jiu” is a very pretty ballad, but it would not be considered one of Jay’s bests.

Jolin Tsai – “I” <我>

The black-and-white MV features Jolin singing quietly, and alone, on an empty stage. However, behind the stage, Jolin strips down her gorgeous dress, takes off her heels, and asks herself, who is the real me? Is it the Jolin on stage or the Jolin behind the stage? Or maybe, it’s both? A slow ballad, and sometimes haunting to listen to, but in the end, it gives you a very satisfying feeling as well.

Khalil Fong – “Love Instantly” <愛立刻>

Khalil’s “Love Instantly” is, unlike Jay and Jolin’s rather gloomy numbers, is slightly more light-hearted and hopeful. Like most of Khalil’s past works, it is an R&B ballad. I thought the MV was a bit too dark for the tone of the song, however. Also, it has a lot of QQ advertising in the MV!
