“Sing! China” Ordered to Stop Auditions

Days before its finale in May, music survival show Youth With You 3 <青春有你 3> was ordered by Chinese authorities to stop production because of its voting controversy. Apparently, authorities are also tightening its grip on other talent competitions, including Sing! China <中國好聲音>, which was refrained from holding auditions and unable to progress in its filming.

Problem Started With “Youth With You 3”

The controversy stemmed from iQIYI’s Youth With You 3, which linked the voting process to the purchase of yogurt drinks. Fans splurged millions of dollars on yogurt drinks so they could use the QR codes on the bottles to vote for their favorite trainees, only to be caught on camera wastefully pouring out 1,000 bottles of yogurt into the sewer. The video went viral and alerted authorities, causing an uproar over the amount of unnecessary waste, irresponsible behavior, and questioning of program operation methods.

Because of the huge controversy, iQIYI issued a public apology over its faulty voting process, while declaring that it has stopped production on Youth With You 3.

Subsequently, Chinese authorities also banned audition activities for other music survival shows. Chuang 4 <創造營> and Sing! China are said to be restricted from holding auditions this year.

The Sing! China production team expressed, “In response to the government’s request to stop all audition activities of variety shows, our program team firmly supports the decision to stop all audition activities nationwide in 2021.”

Disappointed fans were initially excited for the upcoming fifth season, as it would see the return of Jay Chou (周杰倫) as one of the mentors. When reached for comments, Jay’s company responded, “Currently, we have not received any further notice from the production unit.”

  1. I wonder who recorded the pouring of the yogurt drinks. I doubt it’s the fan clubs themselves who recorded it since it’s not something to be proud of. But, if it’s other people, how did they get close up of the pouring act?
