Alvin Chau’s 18-Year Sentence Remains

Sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment on 162 charges of fraud at the start of this year, the family of Alvin Chau Cheok-wa (周焯華), founder and CEO of Suncity Group – the largest junket operator in Macau, had sought to appeal some of the charges along with other defendants in the high-profile case.

They had then been ordered to pay HKD$6.5 billion to the government for lost revenue, and HKD$2.14 billion to five gaming concessionaires which included MGM and The Venetian, for their illicit gaming offences.

On October 19, Macau’s Court of Second Instance acquitted Alvin and six others of their fraud charge in both completed and attempted forms after reviewing the definition of fraud according to Penal Code of Macau, and were exempted from paying any compensation resulting from the alleged fraud. While four of the defendants in the case also had their prison sentences reduced, Alvin’s original sentence of 18 years for his numerous offenses remains.

Alvin Chau’s ex-mistress, Malaysian model Mandy Lieu (劉碧麗) who previously shared a luxurious apartment Argenta in Mid-Levels West with him, had mortgaged her flat in 2021 to Melco Resorts to help bail Alvin out of his financial troubles. In end 2021, Mandy was sued by Melco to handover the flat worth HKD$91 million. The 2,200 square feet unit is now put up for sale at a HKD$95 million price tag.

  1. He deserves to stay for 18yrs…but he will likely get released early due to good behaviour… I doubt he will serve all 18yrs, right to the end.
