Chow Yun Fat Celebrates “Project Gutenberg’s” Box Office Success

Since its release, Project Gutenberg <無雙> made over $1.5 billion HKD worldwide in box office sales to-date. Celebrating the excellent box office reception, Chow Yun Fat (周潤發), Feng Wenjuan (馮文娟), Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智), and a handful of stars attended a big celebration event in Causeway Bay.

Chow Yun Fat happily expressed that the film’s success is due to director Felix Chong (莊文強). Fat Gor laughed, “Thank the director – his father owned a theater when he was little and he watched my films growing up. He watched A Better Tomorrow <英雄本色> over a hundred times and became my fan. My wife even tells Felix not to get so close to me. As it turns out, he’s been secretly working on this script for over 10 years, and he was super brave in confessing and trying to talk to me about the script.”

On the box office earnings, Fat Gor expressed his disbelief on how well the movie did, blowing away his expectations. “I was so happy that I couldn’t sleep for nights. I really didn’t think it would do so well – the timing and everything was definitely perfect.”

Not expecting the positive results either, Felix humbly said, “I have several of these scripts, and most of them are old and worthless.” Asked about the box office, Felix said, “Some people have told me it will reach 1.3 billion RMB. This movie is quite odd – it takes home 100 million RMB a day, but it’s been like that every single day. There are so many good movies playing, but ours just doesn’t know when to give up. It’s now number two at the box offices since there are a number of big movies that have hit theaters recently.”

Felix also attributed the success of the movie to Fat Gor’s excellent acting. Upon hearing this, Fat Gor exclaimed that he has nothing to do with the turnout. In fact, Fat Gor called himself the Hong Kong version of Forrest Gump in which all he did was run around to different places.

Besides Chow Yun Fat, the addition of Liu Kai Chi and Aaron Kwok (郭富城) definitely brought together new surprises for fans. With the movie doing so well, Felix is not ruling out a possible sequel.

In addition, Chow Yun Fat’s performance in Project Gutenberg earned him the Best Actor award at the 14th Annual Chinese American Film Festival. Thanking the director and producer, Chow Yun Fat said, “This is one of the most special roles I have played in my career. I’m very happy. I also have to thank Aaron’s fine performance. Without him, I wouldn’t be able to showcase another side of myself.”
