Did Lay Zhang Break Pandemic Rules?

Long-standing Chinese variety show, Back to Field <嚮往的生活>, has been airing for the past five years. Now that it is in its sixth season, many netizens find that the show has become stale and the comedic moments are few and far between. The ratings have dropped dramatically from last week’s 200 million to around 30 million views.

Along with regular cast members Lay Zhang (張藝興), Zhang Zifeng (張子楓), and Peng Yuchang (彭昱暢), season 6 features many young artistes such as Liu Haoran (劉昊然), Vicky Chen (文琪), and Zhang Youhao (張宥浩).

The media reported that in the new season, Lay was sick almost the entire time and he was lying in bed with a fever. By the next morning, he still did not have the strength to get up and looked very weak. Many of his cast mates expressed their concern with He Jiong (何炅) helping him measure his temperature and Huang Lei (黃磊) bringing some chicken soup.

While the scenes should have been heartwarming to watch, viewers were instead taken aback that Lay was still filming even though he had a fever. They questioned why he was not taken to the hospital and given a PCR test?

According to the filming schedule, this episode was filmed in Haikou in March. After wrapping up filming on March 11, Lay then travelled to Shanghai. According to Haikou’s pandemic guidelines in March, if one was experiencing a fever, he needed to go immediately to the hospital to report the case. If Lay did not go to the hospital, then there was a possibility that he had broken pandemic protocol.
