Esther Yu’s Billionaire Father Had Invested in “Love Between Fairy and Devil”

Love Between Fairy and Devil <蒼蘭訣> was one of summer’s biggest Chinese hits, propelling Esther Yu Shuxin (虞書欣) and Dylan Wang Hedi (王鶴棣) to top idol ranks. The drama achieved high ratings, despite Immortal Samsara <沉香如屑> and Love Like the Galaxy <星漢燦爛·月升滄海> airing during the same summer slot.

With Dylan and Esther’s rise in popularity, many are interested in learning more about their family backgrounds. Dylan was thought to come from a rich family, but it turns out that he grew up in an average family and his father owns a skewer restaurant.

On the other hand, Esther is a true wealthy second generation and often flaunts her wealth. Her family net worth is estimated to be worth 40 billion Chinese yuan. When Esther was 15, her wealth was already over CNY 40 million. She owns four properties in Shanghai, all facing the river.

Esther’s neighbors include A-listers such as Zanilia Zhao Liying (趙麗穎). Surrounding herself with people of similar status, she was also seen partying at a club on Halloween with Wang Sicong (王思聰), the son of one of the richest men in China, spending a whopping CNY 200,000 that night!

Esther had previously disclosed that she had prepared over 100 outfits in preparation for an appearance on a show. When she invited the filming crew to her home, Esther’s Hermes tableware and luxury watches and bags were visible.

A Sensible Upbringing

However, Esther expressed that her parents were very strict with her financially. She was not allowed to buy things that were unsuitable for her age, such as a cell phone. She had to take public transportation to and from school. When she attended university in Singapore, she lived in a regular apartment versus her peers who lived in luxury apartments.

A Budding Entrepreneur

Since elementary school, Esther has been a budding entrepreneur and sold stationery supplies to her classmates. At the suggestion of her father, she started to sell via live stream in high school. At the age of 25, she already owns five companies and is a successful businesswoman in her own right.

Esther boldly proclaimed that she was able to supplement Love Between Fairy and Devil’s budget because she is rich. Her father had allegedly invested in the drama and hired 27 intangible cultural heritage craftsmen to create the props including the fans, embroidery, lacquer art, and jade carvings. The investment paid off, as the beautiful props were one of the reasons for the drama’s good reception.

  1. So she gets to select which lead actors she wants to star with… I am not a fan of her but Love Between Fairy and Devil is a well put together production. Their investment paid off…

    1. @Hohliu no where in the article did it say she get to pick her own leading man? Also if you think that of her, then zhao lusi is the same, as she’s also rich and her family invested a bit on various dramas of her. I haven’t watched fairy n devil, but I don’t think we should slander someone just because they were born rich.

      1. Chill it… just a casual comment..not a statement. So what if she can pick her leading man…which top artiste or sponsored artiste dont get a choice every now and then? I am sure Rosy does too as she get more popular… As for slander…goodness, if you cannot accept a casual comment, stay off such forums, you need to chill it or you get stressed up to easily.

      2. @Hohliu lol, im not stress out, however, since the article said nothing about such thing, and your comment is the first and to open the discussion with that is basically tainted it, and is pretty much slandering, saying something that you dont know for sure, you also discredit her hardworks by suggesting so. Also love how you say your favorite actress as “she would do it too if she has more power”, she already has more power than Esther lol, and again, you dont know whether she can manipulate that kind of thing currently, so you did a positive spin on Zhao Lusi, and negative one on Esther. Is it because esther’s drama is actually more successful than your favourite actress’s one?

  2. This drama was huge success and she seems to have done good job. However, partying with Sicong is not exactly a positive credential, as he is a pure example of everything that is wrong with rich second generation Chinese tycoons/oligarchs. I hope she was not part of Kris Wu entourage as well as Sicong was inseparable with him.

  3. I thought the scriptwriter/director selected Dylan.

One thing’s for sure, though, Esther has her pick of the hottest actors to collab with and I’m sure she has some influence on who gets selected. I haven’t seen her with an ugly/plain male lead yet (except for her first drama which the ML is kinda plain.) She even mentioned outright her desire to be in ebiz is for the hot guys lol.

As much as nepotism sucks in the media world, if they’re talented, then I don’t mind as much. She happens to be both talented and wealthy which helps her productions tremendously. Win-win

    1. Maybe they gave her a list for her opinion…lol. But why not if she can…
Nepotism is everywhere…if I have such connected to enter a industry of my interest with ease, I would love to take it…
I may not be a fan of her but this production is definitely a winner for the investors. I bet we will see more of her…I might warm up to her in time.

    2. Dylan wang isn’t that hot, I don’t see why he’s attractive but whatever lol. He was having such a bad reputation in term of acing that if you could choose your own leading man, you would go for someone else xD I would not doubt that her connections if there is any, helps her be first in line for good script which already has a male lead determined, but I very much doubt she can force the team to pick who she’s working. Because you know some production team do care about their drama/product, which clearly this one was

      1. I watched LBFD and Dylan was really good. This role is suitable for him. His acting improves tremendously. This comes from me who shunned MG, EV2 and felt nauseous seeing him in Miss The Dragon.

      2. Lol I thought Dylan was good looking in MG, but then his acting quickly led to disappointment and I dropped him like a hot potato. Then came Miss Dragon. So cringe and they didn’t even try to make him look good in that. But LBFAD…is a different breed. They filmed him in ALL his good angles. His eyes spoke beautifully. His face is like chiseled and full. It honestly made him look really good, like marble. And his outfits enhances his skinny frame so he doesn’t look like a puny guy and fills him out. Idk you just have to give it a chance to see what’s the uproar

      3. @Coralie
Ooooooh, I can write an essay of how great looking is DD in LBFD….hahahaha. Yes, I agreed that he is good looking to begin with. He has a kind of looks that stood out among his peers. Despite his mediocre acting before LBFD, he has a natural strong stage presence dues to his looks.

  4. If i come from a billionaire family, i will also have many companies under my name and will be financially independent too.

Not suggesting she is not good in what she does, just saying the rich gets LOTS of head start

  5. As viewer, I’m more concerned with the production quality, the plot, the acting etc. Her father’s capital injection isn’t even something that will bother me. it’s much better than having a S+ production with big names in the cast but fails to impress. She’s not the first and will not be the last to bring funds into the production and if the additional financing means better quality in drama production, her father can continue to do so next time.

  6. Well that explains a lot. I don’t usually expect high production value from iQiyi. The graphics were better than expected. I am clearly in the minority here, but I’m not really enjoying this drama. I’m at episode 12, and I find the female lead character too innocently stupid. I also felt like Esther was trying too hard to be cute, between the voice and constant pouting of the lips. I know she’s practically a baby in fairy age, but still. Dylan Wang was a surprise since I found his acting in some of his previous work not that great. He delivered Dongfang Qingcang quite well without being cheesy or over the top. I also like the voice actor they used for him. I’m going to power through in hopes that I’ll enjoy it more later.

    1. Agreed, thank God for Dylan’s voice actor. His own voice is way too young and childish to lead a role like DFQC.

I could be biased, but that’s not just her acting. Her real life personality is very cutesy bubbly like that too. Near the end, you see her become more mature and less spazzy, and you will prob enjoy her more then.

      1. @Coralie I watched her in Youth With You 2 so I do agree she acts cute in real life that way too. I liked her quite a bit in the variety show because she was loud, dramatic and blunt. I think my current issue with LBFaD is mostly the character itself. I typically don’t like the super innocent and kind hearted, but makes really bad/dumb decisions type of female leads. I’ll take your word for it that it gets better. I just need to power through her baby fairy phase :).

      2. @lilseemonster I kept seeing clips about her on YT and then watched her in YwY 2 and fell in love lol. Then saw her acting and was even more impressed. I’m one of the weird ones that finds her baby voice very endearing. Couple that with her personality and she’s born to be in ebiz.

I don’t mind innocent and sweet as long as they don’t remain that way forever. I like seeing progression. Those doe eyed, self righteous, innocent ones, though, are the most annoying – agreed

Use google translate. If her father is a billionaire and their reputation (face) can be saved, why didnt he bail his wife out? It is a mere 2mil yuan. It is puzzling if the govt places a ban on spending on her mother in 2020 but EY is still spending. In these times celebrities are keeping a low profile so as not to be a target for tax audit. And really wealthy ppl dont advertize their wealth the way EY does. Come on. Let’s not be naive. That’s her story line to stand out from the crowd. Many celebs boast of rich connections to further their careers and get more opportunities for jobs. They go further if they have a mountain behind them. Sometimes it feels like boasting is the only way ppl get ahead in china.

  8. “Esther boldly proclaimed that she was able to supplement Love Between Fairy and Devil’s budget because she is rich.”
Where and when did she says that???

    1. LOL These writers! Compare to her lazy neighbor who buys so much water army, at least Esther is truly hard working and didn’t buy any traffic, she also didn’t bribe the media to make her sound like a sweet angel. There’s nothing wrong being rich and putting in money for your production the right way. I don’t like her neighbor, lazy and bitter but writers here only favorite Esther’s neighbor.
I don’t think any rich girl will date Wang Sicong, only poor ones like her neighbor likes him. Interesting that Esther hangs out with him before, but good that it’s only a hang out and not dating. This article is obviously trying so hard to make her sound bad. Saying she’s rich, boasting about investment, and hanging out with a tycoon.

  9. For all I care, the quality of the drama is top notch and not boring. And they relied on honest feedbacks. Money spent ethically. I don’t care who spent the money bc they spent it the right way.
I can’t stand poor and lazy actresses, their stuff is boring but they hire tons of bots to flood everywhere to repeat how good their stuff is when they are so boring. That’s when I care who’s spending the money and also taking all the salary.
