Francis Ng Doesn’t Want Fake Weibo Fans

Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) was recently offered a lucrative gift: five million fans.  According to a recent mainland Chinese news report, an unidentified agency is offering Weibo users extra followers if they are willing to pay up a certain amount; 7 RMB can get a Weibo user with over 500 extra “zombie fans” on Weibo; 8 RMB guarantees 1,000 fans; and 80,000 RMB guarantees ten million fans.

It has been said that Francis was approached by the agency, in which Francis posted a response on his Weibo earlier, “Originally someone promised to give me five million fans as a present, as an end-of-the-world surprise, but in turns out that five million fans cost 10,000 RMB! Sigh!”

Francis further commented saying that such a gift would be useless and added that he prefers getting more money instead. “Rather have that person give cash to me. I want 50 million fans, not 5 million. Let’s play it a little bigger.” He then added that he does not want any zombie fans, saying, “But lying is shameful, and lying to myself is pitiful. It is as if getting plastic surgery and getting a personality makeover. I didn’t know Weibo can get boob jobs? Leave me alone! I don’t want zombie noodles [fans]. I only want my pig head noodles [referring to his fanclub].”Francis has changed his Weibo DP picture to a bespectacled pig with angel wings.

The 52-year-old actor made his Weibo soon after he began shooting Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲宵II> last year, and currently has over 680,000 followers. Could Francis be hinting that some Weibo stars have purchased “zombie” fans?

      1. Those who employ fake fans are unbelievable entertainers and its a shame on them scenario.
Would’nt need to think twice to buy a ticket to watch Francis’s film but would for some cowboy entertainers.

  1. I love his straightforwardness. He doesn’t hold back and I respect him for that.

  2. What is he weibo account name? I wanna follow him!! Hmm wondering which star has did the paying deal!!!

    1. Haha…probably not a good idea to go by weibo account name cuz Francis actually changes his account name every so often (he’s already changed it 3-4 times since he opened his account).

In any case, I love Francis’ straightforward nature as well…his weibo posts are always an interesting read for me.

  3. So fb is banned in hk as well? Is weibo the chinese version of fb? Im still confused as to what weibo is

    1. No, FB is only banned in China. In HK you can use YTB or FB like normal.

Weibo is different to FB or twitter although it’s also a social network. It’s closer to new twitter somehow.

      1. I wonder why Facebook is banned in China? At least they have other alternatives to it. Also not everyone uses Facebook.

      2. Because it is worldwide and they want to control flow of info.

  4. I have the weirdest concern on my Weibo , looks like all adss

  5. Fake children’s formula, handbags, cellphones, and now Weibo fans…what else can China think of to make money…only people with an inferiority complex with an inflated ego stoop to pay for a fan base. Francis is a down to earth guy.

    1. aptos,
Not surprised by the fake Weibo fans. It was revealed that HK singer, Juno Mak, once had fake fans attend his gatherings to boost the public’s perception of his popularity levels. This was in the early 2000s at the start of Juno’s career.

It’s a tactic that’s likely common in the entertainment industry, to create buzz and social conversations online. If there are paid reviewers to generate more buzz for consumer products in online portals and even on Amazon, it’s understandable that fake fans can be bought on Weibo to generate positive talk for certain films or even artists.

      1. I cannot believe that they would do that. Francis does not seem like that type at all though. He is really honest and down to earth.

  6. Francis is the most under rated artist in HK and mainland maybe he just doesn’t know how to get good connection he is by far the best actor in every movie and series

  7. Jayne, I have been an avid reader of your site since 2004 before you totally turned the site into a business. Just wanted to let you know the ads of late are highly annoying…too many pop ups and requests to links. Anyway you can tone it down as I am considering not coming back to the site due to too many ads. Some vdo ads turn themselves on whilst I am reading :(.

    1. Well, Jayne just like any sites need ads and all to exist and function or else, who will pay for the server costs and stuff? I think you need to be more understanding about the server costs and other costs that it rakes to run a site. At least Jayne is not asking for money or anything from readers. In fact, she is also really generous and gives out gifts and prizes to reading without ever asking for anything in return. You should see how much it costs to run a big site. Like at AF, I heard it costs so much that the webmaster had to resort to asking for donations in order to keep the site going. But Jayne has not asked for anything so I hope you are more understanding and considerate towards her situation.

  8. Well said HeTieShou, I love Jayne site, give lots of Chinese entertainment info for overseas readers specially to people don’t read Chinese like me 🙂

  9. Its totally understandable about the ads being a necessity as part of Jayne’s business. However like I said it is the pop up ads, the links that pop up of late that is highly annoying and aggressive which is my point. For almost a decade I have followed Jayne and watched the site evolve. I am sure I am not the one and only reader feeling annoyed about the pop up ads and vdos that turn on by themselves. Balance is all I am requesting.
