Jet Li Shares Secret Behind Martial Arts Mastery

Martial artist superstar Jet Li (李連杰) stars in Blades of the Guardians <镖人:风起大漠> alongside Wu Jing ( 吴京) and Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒).  After the film premiered on the first day of the Lunar New Year, Jet Li capitalized on the renewed attention by announcing plans to release a memoir, Beyond Life and Death: The Way of True Freedom, on May 4.

Jet made the announcement on his social media and shared some of his personal memories from the book. The marital artist recalled that when he was learning martial arts at a young age, he was keen on thinking deeply and questioning the reasons behind things. When his master instructed him to repeat a move 1000 times, Li pondered, “Why practice 1000 times?”’

While his fellow students blindly followed and completed the movements 1000 times, Li stubbornly insisted on practicing only 700 times. However, it was his insistence that gave him a new insight: “If you keep repeating the movements 1000 times without thinking during the process, you are training your body continuously without using your mind.”

The Real Reason Why Jet Li Surpassed His Fellow Apprentices

When he gained an understanding of the true principles of martial arts, Jet thought, “If I were to use a mental and principle approach, I would choose to practice each move 700 times and perfecting it each time. I would focus on every detail of the move to unify my mind and body.”

Jet explained that because of his different approach, he chose to pursue perfection in the shortest time and set his goals apart from his fellow students. Ultimately, Jet Li stood out among his fellow students and became the national all-around martial arts champion. Jet eventually was selected to star in films, and eared widespread respect for his craft.
