Kent Cheng Promotes His New TVB Drama, Praises Vincent Wong

TVB’s upcoming cmoedy drama My Life As Loan Shark <街坊財爺> has kickstarted its promotional tour, in support of its premiere on September 2, 2019. The drama stars Kent Cheng (鄭則仕), Lai Lok-yi (黎諾懿), Mandy Wong (黃智雯), Maggie Shiu (邵美琪), and also Kingdom Yuen (苑瓊丹), her first TVB drama since 2016’s My Dangerous Mafia Retirement Plan <火線下的江湖大佬>.

My Life As Loan Shark centers on a family of loan sharkers who have come to realize that their methods of exploitation may not be the best way for their family. Kent, an expert in comedic acting, said the show wasn’t exactly an easy project for him. “There will be a level of difficulty in any show you do. The genre may be the same, but the character will be completely different. Every time I play a new character I have to grasp onto a new personality. The longer you are in acting, the harder it is to do a character well. It’s because you have the shadows of all the characters you’ve portrayed in the past.”

The Importance of Staying Up-to-Date

Despite being a veteran in the industry, Kent said he has never slowed down in his chase for more experience. “Generations come and go, and they’re all different. What would happen in ten years? That’s why it’s important to be up to date and follow what the generation is doing. I’ve been watching a lot of news and watching many great dramas, especially nowadays. We have the resources to consume content from all over the world.”

When it comes to TVB’s very own dramas, Kent said he is supportive. He’s been watching the channel’s current shows everyday, including Scoop <東張西望>. “In these past two years, I’ve been really noticing Vincent Wong (),” he said. “So far he’s the only one I noticed who has that potential to be really good. I think he’s stepping onto his maturity stage. Before him, there was Charmaine Sheh (). But these are just my opinions. It’s kind of like horse betting. We all have our own preferences. Just because I find him the best doesn’t mean the others aren’t good.”

Everyone Knows Lai Lok-yi’s Wife

Lai Lok-yi plays a cop who investigates Kent’s family, and Mandy Wong plays his girlfriend. My Life As Loan Shark is Lok-yi and Mandy’s first collaboration as as couple.

“I’m so happy that I finally got the opportunity!” said Lok-yi. “Now I can officially use this an excuse to date Mandy. That’s why I had to request the director to give us all the rainy day scenes, like all those Korean dramas.”

Mandy said Lok-yi is among her favorite costars to work with. She explained, “He really knows how to take care of you. Whether we are in character or not, he really treats you as his girlfriend. The most amazing part of all of this is that he can read you very well. When he starts to see that I’m having a little tantrum, he would know how to deal with it. He would use these strategies to help me.”

Pointing out that Lok-yi’s wife, Nicole Lee (李潔瑩), may not like what Mandy had said, Lok-yi quickly clarified, “Actually my wife knew Mandy before she met me. They were both in the same pageant year. They even shared the same room. What a small world. Right now I feel like I’m being watched, because every actress that I’ve worked with knows my wife.”
