Lai Lok Yi: “Tavia Yeung And I Are Not Lovers Yet”

Hong Kong tabloids claimed that Tavia Yeung (楊怡)and Lai Lok Yi (黎諾懿) turned from friends to lovers. Allegedly, Lai Lok Yi frequently had dinner at Tavia’s house and knew her mother very well. Tabloids claimed that Lok Yi possessed a resident card at Tavia’s apartment building and was free to come and go as he pleased. In addition, he and Tavia shared the same parking space.

While filming ATF Counter Terrorism Unit < ATF反恐>, reporters asked Lai Lok Yi about his romantic rumors with Tavia. Lok Yi noted that he knew Tavia’s family very well and often had dinner with them. “I am only good friends with Tavia. I often have dinner at her house. I know her mother very well. It is possible for a man and woman to [have friendship] other than a dating relationship!”

Regarding claims that Lai Lok Yi was eating breakfast at Tavia’s house, he said, “Are there photos? That’s not the truth. I did eat dinner there. I do not possess a resident card. Tavia asked someone to open the door for me.”  Regarding the use of Tavia’s parking space, Lok Yi explained that Tavia’s car broke down and he temporarily borrowed the space.

Asked whether there was any room for additional development with Tavia, Lok Yi said, “It difficult to answer. However, work will come first. Also, destiny is not here yet.” He stressed that he was currently not dating Tavia, but possessed very good feelings towards her. Since the future was unpredictable, he did not eliminate the possibility that they may become lovers in the future.

Regarding allegations that she was paying for Lok Yi’s living expenses, Tavia said, “What the heck are they saying that I’m paying for his living expenses? How do I have the qualifications? We are good friends and our relationship is not as you think.” Asked whether there was possibility to develop further with Lok Yi, Tavia said, “We’ll deal with things in the future later. I’ll tell you then!”

This article has been updated to reflect additional details from Orientaldaily, including Tavia’s response to the matter.

Jayne: Lai Lok Yi did not deny  frequenting Tavia’s home. He said he has good feelings towards her and did not eliminate possibility that they may develop further. Sounds like he is dating her!

Lok Yi’s answer seems to leave a lot more room for imagination instead of Tavia’s earlier answer that she had no “electrical connection” with Lok Yi. If he has good feelings about her, eats at her home frequently, spends time with her mother as a good “son-in-law,” sounds like they are dating!

Wow, Tavia’s dating news with Lai Lok Yi took me by surprise, simply because there was little proof until the recent Oriental Sunday magazine cover story, featuring photos of Lok Yi parking at Tavia’s house. I guess they managed to keep their relationship low profile by having dinner dates at her house.

My goodness, this takes me completely by surprise too! I’ve never even come across rumours of them dating, until recently! Good job keeping it under wraps!

Funnily enough, I’m currently watching an old drama, The Land Of Wealth, and Lok Yi’s character likes Tavia’s character but she does not reciprocates his feelings. LOL!

        @exoidus,

Kate is not boring, but still only has average acting. She can be sexy and alluring. Chris can’t. He only speaks his line in a very righteous manner. That seems to be the only impression he gives me. *yawn yawn

        @Fox,

Agree and many have said that she is more suitable for tough roles, which resembles her real life personality. Btw, if an artist can only play certain roles confidently, doesn’t that make them not a well-rounded and great actress? *sigh

I understand why many people don’t like Kate’s acting in Wax and Wane, because in the past I didn’t like her in goody-goody roles either. I think it’s her character that shined more than the actress’s acting skills. Personally, I loved Fu Kwai Mui for opening up Roger’s heart; they would have been such a sweet pair. Ron’s character was a bit too immature for her. In such a case where she had a likable character, as long as she had decent acting, I don’t mind.

Also, I think Lok Yi is very nice person, very outgoing, I can see a lot of people like him. About his acting, he still have time to learn and improve. I believe he can get better with time. He seems getting promote by TVB as I see he took a picture with 620 lately and he just got a very long article in the latest TVB issue. Anyway, I have hope for Lok Yi. I doubt that TVB will promote him just because he won Strictly go dancing. Look at Nancy, she is still nobody after this show. Or Grace Wong. Michael Tse only got the promotion not because of the Strictly go dancing but the role Laughing Gor. So Lai Lok Yi needs a memorable role more than the winning Strictly go dancing.

I think Lokyi will get more promotion after the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Yes, Nancy was not push to the lead, but, she did get more promotion and bigger roles after ‘SCD’. Same with Michael Tse. Winning is not the guarantee for promotion. Getting more supporters is. Grace Wong won the competition, but, Nancy was more popular and has more supporters through out the competition.

        @Kidd, @Exoidus
IMO, Lai Lok Yi gained the most popularity after “Hearts of Fencing.” Since then, his roles slipped and he disappeared from the limelight. TVB did not have a directed approach in marketing him to audiences, unlike Ron Ng, Raymond Lam, and Bosco Wong, who were given a lot more high-profile opportunities.

Physically, Lok Yi meets the requirements of a lead actor. However, acting wise, I think he has a long way to go. It really depends on whether TVB wishes to promote him more and give him custom-tailored roles. If some Korean actors can succeed based solely on looks in romantic driven roles, nothing is impossible. It’s a matter of whether Lok Yi has the backing to succeed and producers to work with his strengths instead of cast him in minor roles that have little to do.

There are of course actors who have minor roles that succeed and grab your attention despite the thin material they have. Character actors such as Oscar Leung and Jazz Lam do not possess the handsome leading male qualities, but they also make up the strong backing of the support cast. One day, perhaps one of them may also become a Wayne Lai. In the TVB world, looks are still valued over talent. In the interim, actors such as Oscar and Jazz have to work harder than more handsome counterparts in proving their talent because they will not succeed based solely on looks.

@Jayne: You forgot Wong Cho Lam. Wong Cho Lam is someone who dun have look but he can make it himself. Well, he is kinda OTT but his talents are undeniable.

        Fox,
Wong Cho Lam is building his career based on his comedic talents. Looks are not important for a comedian.

I cited Oscar Leung and Jazz Lam because they are dramatic actors and will have to show their acting range to prove to the audiences and internal TVB producers their talent. Since Oscar and Jazz look like young kids despite their real age, their phsyical appearance limits the roles they can play. However, producers seem to also value acting talent and continue to cast them in bit parts. They have very little publicity and are not featured in the news, so to the majority of audiences they do not remember them in their active conscious mind.

“IMO, Lai Lok Yi gained the most popularity after “Hearts of Fencing.” Since then, his roles slipped and he disappeared from the limelight. “

It’s a pity. I don’t get TVB didn’t cash on the momentum either. Is the ratings for HOF actually not that good in HK? But, if not good, they wouldn’t have made 4 Leaf Clover 2, 3, 4 etc.

The 4 Leaf Clover series are actually unlike other series. They were aired during the weekend only, I believe. Seems like TVB attempt at idol series.

“TVB did not have a directed approach in marketing him to audiences, unlike Ron Ng, Raymond Lam, and Bosco Wong, who were given a lot more high-profile opportunities.”

I really don’t know what happen in between. Did TVB never plan to promote Lok Yi? No. They put him in the Olympic 6 Stars group. So, TVB has plan to promote him. But, it didn’t come through.

I personally like Lok Yi. But, I can see why some people think he’s boring. His acting is kinda wooden.

Btw, I want to say something about MR. MR totally wasted this character. His character is another conflict character. But, the scriptwriters choose to spend screentime on Linda’s boring love story.

I do not feel pity that Lai Lok Yi is in his current status. His physical qualifications already supercede over his colleagues such as Oscar Leung and Jazz Lam. Physically he had his advantage. The rest, such as people connections and acting improvement are in his hands. Many actors, limited by their advancing age or younger actors lacking the ‘leading man look’ have physical obstacles they cannot change.

Like Fox said, Lok Yi had somewhat prominent roles in “Hearts of Fencing” and “Ten Brothers.” Although his role was minor in “Heart of Greed,” a stronger actor such as Oscar Leung would have delivered the court room and emotional scenes better.

Due to Lok Yi’s handsome qualities, producers gave him chances. He had lead and supporting roles, although the roles were inconsistent in screen time. One series he could be male lead “The Beauty of the Game” while another series such as “Cupid Stupid” he plays a minor role.

I mentioned that TVB did not have a consistent approach in promoting him, as shown by the varying screentime he has in various series. The audience struggle with the connection as to whether he is a lead man, second supporting actor, or kelefe. He seems haphazardly cast in series. This shows that Virginia Lok does not have him on her active roster of “looked after artists” since Lok Yi is now left to flounder on his own and win audience hearts based on his acting.

Kenneth Ma and Lai Lok Yi were both promoted as Olympic 6 Stars. Kenneth mentioned in interview that he was just an extra body in the Olympic 6 Stars promotion, since TVB’s intent at the time was to promote Ron, Ray, Bosco, and Sammul more. I believe that Kenneth and Lok Yi were borderline favored at the time, but again it is dependent upon what each artist makes of their own destiny.

I will point out that Kenneth was less favored than Lok Yi in the beginning. Kenneth played a lot of “unlikeable” characters and always received lowered billing than Ron and Bosco in series. However, through sheer hard work and improvement in his acting, Kenneth climber higher and achieved his current status, even winning the Most Improved Actor Award. It also helps that Ms. Lok probably likes Kenneth a little more that Lok Yi. Kenneth also seems to get along with the media slightly more, however he doesn’t have that much publicity either.

Again, I think Lok Yi was blessed with a good physical package. He should not lament that there were lack of opportunities and focus on taking acting lessons or tips from veterans instead. Anything is possible and he can be a lead man and still tread on shaky acting ground or continue to polish on those acting skills first. Until TVB heavily promotes him, Lok Yi will have to depend upon himself.

At the time of Olympic 6 Stars, 6 of theses actors were around the same age and vying for the same type of roles at TVB. Kenneth surged ahead of Lok Yi because he took on villian roles that were not given to the rest. You can say that Sammul polished his acting skills through oddball and flawed characters he played in TVB series and learning from mainland actors as well.

Aside from emoting, Lok Yi’s problem is that his approach has not matured and lack depth, despite being in the industry for 10 years. Kenneth’s acting matured and even Ron has changed his technique a bit. But Lok Yi has remained stagnant and his acting approach is not too different from his “Heart of Fencing” days. In fact, I sense more confidence in him in “Heart of Fencing” rather than in recent series.

Acting is part analysis and part technique. I believe artists can improve with more concentrated effort. Maybe Lok Yi should experience more extreme experiences in life to prepare for his roles. Study other actors delivery. Starve himself for a few days to experience what hunger feels like. Record his heartbreak experiences in a diary and try to deliver his grief onscreen. Anything helps. I think the wooden acting is because he is more a “middle-of-the-road” type personality, very easy-going and thus labeled boring and lacking range.

So, I said it’s a pity that TVB didn’t cash in.

Now, you go and say it’s not a pity, he has prominent roles in several series, which is contradictory “his roles slipped and he disappeared from the limelight.”

        I give up.

I agree with most of what you said in your latest long comment, but, I think this is not your original thought. You most probably read Fox’s example of his major roles and remember that he actually has some and reevaluate your thought.

        Kidd,
Perhaps my opinion was not clear until my secong long post. In the first post, I was merely stating an observance that Lai Lok Yi’s popularity was the highest after “Hearts of Fencing.” Yes I did forget about his other prominent roles because he also had a lot of smaller, supporting roles in between. My only flip-flop is failing to remember the number of his leading roles.

Given his looks, I think Lai Lok Yi looks like a leading man. Thus, in theory, TVB can market him and give him custom-tailored roles based on his looks alone. Whether he is a capable actor is another matter. Thus my long rant that I do not pity him because I think he needs to put in a lot of effort to become a solid leading actor. I don’t believe people should be handed opportunities after opportunities without improvement efforts to match.

Based on his response, it definitely seems like he likes her, and there is room for development if they are not dating already. I’ve heard of this rumor before in the past, but it was not heavily reported by the media since Tavia is usually rumor-free. However, this might be a publicity stunt for Lai Lok Yi to boost his popularity since Tavia is leading actress and he had a boost in fame since winning Strictly Come Dancing, so TVB wants to leverage his popularity and bring up the rumors again. Good luck to them!
I think his acting still has a lot of room for improvement, but with more opportunities, I think he will get better with time. Afterall, he’s tall and looks decent. Even Ron was wooden when he first started, but he’s getting better.

It was survivor’s law that made me love him but strictly I am not a fan. Before that, he was too OTT in his acting. Suddenly somehow he understood less is more. He should have taken Kenneth’s character, jeans as tight BUT at least got to lie down or strip a little bit.

Yes, he has. Below are 3 I know
        – Crimson Sabre (masked assassin)
        – Threshold of an Era (Prison Guard)
        – Incurable Traits (nameless soldiers)

“tvb promoted him constantly making the audience accepting him as male lead. agree with you that his acting is not bad and it’s easy to make the people like him. tvb can obviously make leads out of anyone they choose to, just like at char.”

Disagree. Yes, some actors/actresses succeeded this way. But, I don’t think Raymond is one of them. Raymond gain acceptance from his acting in ASITP and based on this, TVB continue to promote him. Honestly, I never felt he was pushed down my throat.

Raymond Lam already has fans before TVB’s Prince Charming branding. In fact, I know some long time fans of him are tired of TVB giving him the same kind of goody two shoes/Prince Charming roles and hope TVB give him back some challenging roles.

I’m not a fan of Raymond. But, I always have good opinion on his acting. I never watch a series for Raymond, but I was always confident that he will give a good performance in his role if he happen to be in the series I watch (until MOL where his acting disappointed me) and welcome his participation. As for why I didn’t become his fan eventhough I think highly of his acting, I don’t know. Maybe there’s something that didn’t click.

As for Lok Yi’s lack of opportunities and promotion. I don’t what happen in between. He was one of the Olympic 6 Stars. But, others have move ahead of him.

In fact he is klf in 6 series, supporting in 2 and then started as a meaty supporting in A taste of love before ASITP.

Before having the prince image in 2005, he already has fans. There are a lot of fans he gained in the beginning of his career, ATOL or ASITP.

His acting might get boring recently with TVB (I say with TVB because I don’t count the role he did in China as this type. This role is definitely a player who dun blv in marriage. A role like Kenneth’s in MOL but have reason to be that – born in a broken family), however to say that “they just like to watch him just because he’s Lam fung after the whole process of branding” isn’t really right. Maybe to the new fans but to the old fans, who followed him for more than 10 years, if he is just the branding, they changed to another a long while.

His huge fanbase can’t base on the branding alone. He isn’t in the industry for just 1 or 2 years but 12 years.

however he is overrated acting wise, in tvb due to lack of real talent and people that can act he might stand out but in movies he is very very ordinary.

in the end im just arguing that tvb can make chris into a male lead if they want to since he is way better looking than lf and his acting is not as bad as some people here say he is.

I actually thought Exoidus’ answer was great and informative enough for Fox’s query. Not because I had debate with Fox before that made me said that. I honestly agree with Exoidus that even Chris was offered 2nd lead or minor role with many dialogues. The script and dialogue itself made Chris boring onscreen, therefore how can it impact the fan gets any good impression or even like him onscreen? Fox said “some actor managed to pull out from their minor role by acting” but look at Chris, his script and dialogue are already plain, dull and boring to look at so how can he gain attention onscreen? It’s really a matter of branding and mind manupulating.

I agree with Fox. I don’t proclaim to be a LF fan, but I did like watching him before 2007. His series after that was blah and the characters he played were too safe.

Also, I don’t think TVB branding Lai Lok Yi will help a lot if he doesn’t have a solid acting base. Although TVB chose to market LF, he at least has some solid acting and I like watching him. That’s not the case for Lok Yi.

One thing I wonder is if TVB scriptwriters made a custom-tailored script for him, would he deliver better? The majority of his roles are just boring and forgettable. I have a feeling Lok Yi is also lacking in some confidence when he delivers due to TVB’s inconsistent attitude towards promoting him. He may have had some luck and thought he had a chance in the past, but he still needs to put some hard work in.

No doubt that LF’s has been in the industry for years and LF’s acting skill has reached a certain level where audiences won’t raise any doubt or query to it. People will definitely come to him for an autograph or take pic with him just because he’s LF. But we cant deny that TVB marketing didn’t package, branding and give huge attention, promotions, advertisements etc to boost LF to this level.

I’m not a diehard fan of Lok Yi and my opinion was merely based from observation. It’s obvious that Lok Yi has less or maybe none promotions sponsored by tvb to the public, just how many time do you see Lok Yi appear at the ribbon cutting or party events or maybe magazine cover? maybe none.. Lok Yi’s acting skill seems boring onscreen but I bet if he’s really given a good role perhaps an interesting one with hyper reaction required, Im sure he can prove to the audience that he too can act like LF. Just look at TWins, they were only some normal young girls when they first join the industry and after the massive brandings and promotions, they became one of the top ten richest singer in Hk. Branding/promotions are definitely 2 important factors that made someone famous after we excluded boring script/role.

It’s actually a pretty good series. You should catch it if you have a chance to. For this series, I feel more bad for the other 3 main actors. They get even less chances than Lai Lok Yi. Lai Lok Yi is actually the most successful alumni of the ‘4 Leaf Clover’ franchise. I really don’t get what’s the purpose of the Clover franchise if they don’t plan to promote the actors and actresses in it? For training? As a graduation project?

I think is role in ‘Heart of Greed’ has great potential. He’s the son who is torn between the main family and his mom. A lot of conflicting emotions and feelings he can display.

He actually gain some fans after 4 Leave Clover and I think TVB did cash in on the momentum because his roles after that is quite meaty.

I just realised who TVB wants promoted as next big brother. Kenneth Ma. You can’t have him in villanous role and not intend to polish him as the next glittering new big brother. Kinda like with Nick Cheung or Roger Kwok.

So, can we predict that Steven fans will complain that TVB used him to promote other actors?

    Funn,
“I just realised who TVB wants promoted as next big brother. Kenneth Ma.”

I suspect Kenneth Ma will be a long-standing pillar at TVB. He loves acting for the sake of acting. Before Wayne Lai became big, Kenneth said he admired Wayne Lai and Benz Hui for their acting skills and always eager to learn from them. In fact, I think he is quite friendly with Wayne.

I don’t think Kenneth was always favored when he entered the industry. If you look at his early years in TVB (going back to Triumph in the Skies), he had few fans. His early villain roles did not receive favorable recognition. However, Kenneth continued to work hard and learn from veterans. He approaches acting more as a craft and technique to be learned. Plus, he is enough of a blank slate (similar to Wayne Lai, able to lose himself in his character), doesn’t have an ego, not actively promoted to the state of being an idol with young fan girls having fantasies about him. These things allow Kenneth to continuously improve his craft, while polishing his skills in challenging roles.

I don’t think Kenneth Ma will be the next big brother in the next few years. If you look at roles, Bosco has more interesting characters to play. Raymond has more marketing behind him. Kenneth is a strong actor and continuing to improve. His loyalty to TVB is obvious and he has good working relationship with producers. He is an actor workhorse, interested in his craft and complacent in not caring about the title and promotion, but rather just doing his job well. An employer’s dream employee.

No doubt Ray is already there. So to compare Ray’s path with Kenneth is not fair at all since Ray to me is big bro in TVB with the absence of the usual big bros, Bobby, Bowie, etc.

Bosco may have more interesting role to play but I just don’t see him getting any higher. You can say same with Ron but Ron is steadily rebuilding his acting credentials even if he is still a lousy actor. Bosco to me is like Tavia; being forced into audience’s mouth as the next big thing when frankly, I like Bosco but on screen he is not engaging at all. Since he got interesting roles, I believe his acting is the problem.

Kenneth is luckier than Wayne; he need not wait that long and I sincerely believe he is being carved a better career path than any of the aforementioned names (save for Ray of course). I see TVB installing him as the next Bobby; as in at TVB, steady, continous. He has the charisma.

Problem is watching him in that series next to Steven Ma, my eyes look at Steven Ma more. No doubt he is secondary actor with a prominent role but after AFOS I find Kenneth getting interesting solely because of that white cheongsam thing he wore… (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh). I don’t understand the villanous role. I think he can be the prince charming once occupied by Ray but he is either a villain, a fool or casanova. At least as villain he gets to practice on his acting which is…frankly.. not good at all. I know he is passionate about acting but right now, his passion alone is not enough. He has got to work on those expression, emotion. Everytime he goes angry I cringe. Like everytime Kevin wants to emote, I cringe.

But yes I do believe TVB is prepping him which is good. The path he is taking is steady so it is good for him.

But he should care about title, promotion. Like hollywood actors, once you hit a blockbuster, you can do whatever art house movies they want. Same with TVB actors. I think he was already on his path to second lead so to speak, MOL, etc but it was AFOS that gave him wide exposure. I just wished he had the wit to use those exposure.

Hi Jimmy, I’m quite interested to know what makes you wrote that comment. How much do you know he’s not suitable for her. Anyway, it’s their life and they should be given a choice whom they want to choose isn’t it?

I think Lok Yi has potential but he needs lots of practice. Not sure what it is, but he looks good without opening his mouth. Perhaps it’s his voice, it does not suits him. On a side note, I think he did fairly well in TOT, big improvement.
I personally don’t think it’s that important to make it the top, look at Power Chan for example, he does not play lead roles but yet he is very pleasant to watch and seems to be leading a very happy life with his new wife. If one knows the limit that could be attained, then concentrate on doing what you can do best. I don’t think Lok Yi can be leading material but second lead, he should be able to. He looks good but he is not natural in his acting, very forced. Regardless, if him and Tavia are dating, good for them. They seems to be a match and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. The reason Tavia mentioned money all the time is because she does have a money tree in her backyard and she knows that in this business, there is only a few more years for her to earn as much as she can. She is supporting her mom, so quite filial if you are asking me.

I disagree. Perhaps climbing to the top is not the most important, as it’s not for Lok Yi at his stage. I think he should focus on improving his acting first. You mentioned that he doesn’t have a pleasant voice, and I must agree. He sounds old and… I can’t seem to find the exact word to describe it.

Personally, I think it’s good to have that ambition to climb to the top. Charmaine Sheh, Fala Chen, Michelle Ye, Raymond Lam, Bosco Wong, and some others seems to have greater aspirations. I have a respect for these artists because they have this aspiration although strictly speaking, I can’t say I’m a fan of their acting. I like watching Charmaine, Fala and Raymond and like Bosco as a person, but wouldn’t necessarily call myself a fan.

In Power’s case, he seems to enjoy acting and may be one of the few TVB artists who treat acting as a form of art more than a job. I haven’t seen him in a while and only recently in Sentinel did I remember him again. If Power had more handsome looks, was taller, and had a sexier body, would he not want to achieve higher? Yes, he seems happy with his wife and all, but I still sense that if he had the chance and physical attraction, he would wanted to have achieved higher. However, since it’s nature and Power does not want to change his outer appearance to make money, then it’s important that he is satisfied with what he has.

It seems like Lok Yi does have greater aspirations and wants to make himself more well-known and gain bigger roles. Earlier, there was an article about how he wanted to use his masculinity to win over the audience. I still believe he should focus on his acting more. Everyone knows how he looks and most people believe he’s tall and decent looking, therefore, he should show us another side of him that we haven’t seen yet.

I believe every person has their own goal in mind, some are higher than others. Everyone’s “make it to the top” is a little different. Fala mentioned that she wants to win the Oscar, Kenneth says he’s satisfied if he reaches Benz and Wayne’s state, LF is very ambitious and seems to want to be singing and acting king. Charmaine has reached her goal of making it to top fadan at TVB and knowing that there isn’t any higher she can get in TVB, she decided to spread her influence in the mainland market.

Thus, I do believe that it is important for one to achieve the goal they set for themselves as it gives them a sense of personal satisfaction.

I don’t think it’s his voice. It’s the way he talks. Can’t pinpoint what’s exactly is the problem, but, it’s not smooth.

Hi Kidd, I also felt that way. Actually it’s his pronounciation, emm sorry I’m not sure but you know some Chinese said the tongue is short that’s why it’s affecting one’s pronounciation. Actually there’s this actress Yoyo Mung, she has the same problem, you can’t really listen clearly what they said…

Err maybe it’s like the tongue is not flexible, cantonese said it as “chi lei kan” well so far these are the 2 artists that I find have that problem.
