Legend of the Ancient Sword <古剑奇谭之流月昭明>, the live-action adaptation of the 3D RPG game Gu Jian Qi Tian 2, has wrapped up principal photography. The cast and crew celebrated photography completion on February 25, and did a live broadcast of the celebration process.
The fantasy epic stars Leehom Wang (王力宏) as Yue Wuyi, son of a wealthy Chang’an family who leaves home to embark on a journey of cultivation. Along the way, he meets Wen Renyu (Victoria Song 宋茜), Xia Yize (Godfrey Gao 高以翔), and Ah Ruan (Karena Ng 吳千語), and together the adventurers attempt to stop the evil priest Chen Ye (Julian Cheung 張智霖) from destroying the world.
Directed by Renny Harlin, best known for his 1990 film Die Hard 2 starring Bruce Willis, Legend of the Ancient Sword combines the aesthetics of Hollywood cinematography and Chinese fantasy culture. Harlin said he hopes his experiences in Hollywood could transcend well into the film, setting a new milestone in Chinese fantasy films.
The crew of Legend of the Ancient Sword spent three months shooting the film across China. Harlin developed a close relationship with the cast, in particular Leehom, whom he calls his own brother. Harlin also praised Victoria’s performance in the film, and that her role, Wen Renyu, seemed as if it was tailor-made for her. The director then lauded Godfrey’s good looks, and said he would “definitely” consider Godfrey in future films.
During the celebration dinner, which was broadcast live, the director and the cast chopped bamboo trees—an indication that principal photography has completed. Afterwards, Leehom performed one of his classics “The One I Love is You” <愛的就是你>, in which the cast sang along. During the raffle, Leehom’s assistant and Godfrey Gao both won prize money, but the two decided to generously donate their prizes back to the crew.
Legend of the Ancient Sword is slated for an early 2018 release.
