Liza Wang Keeps Work Collectibles in Her Studio

With over 50 years in entertainment, the veteran actress has a special space where she keeps career-defining drama posters and opera collectibles.

Filming in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when he encountered the coronavirus outbreak, actor Law Kar Ying (羅家英) underwent a 14-day quarantine when he returned to Hong Kong. Resuming his normal life thereafter, he enjoyed his favorite Japanese cuisine and started preparing for an upcoming opera show in September with wife Liza Wang (汪明荃), with the two reminiscing shared memories in their private studio.

Still Going Strong

Liza shared that she would be delivering Fairy Couple, Madame Butterfly, and Coriolanus. Looking back at his performance of Coriolanus two decades earlier, Law Kar Ying exclaimed how their youthfulness and energy had shone through back then. While Liza hummed the tunes of the songs within the play, he followed suit and launched into spontaneous singing, showing off his impressive vocals.

The studio where the duo often rehearse at is located in Kowloon Bay, and Liza had tailored the room design for opera practice. Before every Cantonese opera performance, the couple would rehearse at this personal venue. As the location had a high ceiling, Liza added another attic-like level where television and film memorabilia and other collectibles she had kept over the last 50 years were stored.

The studio was filled from top to toe with classic posters such as Yesterday’s Glitter <京華春夢>, Limelight Years <華麗轉身> and Bloomabliss Theatre Company <福陞粵劇團>, including props from her opera performances, such as the swords, knives and fly-whisks which she had used, as well as a valued painting given to her by actress Nan Hong (南紅).

Keeping all treasured and meaningful items well-organized, the 72-year-old actress said, “I keep all the posters through the years, save for my Cantonese opera clothes, which are stored at a different place.”
