Louis Koo (古天樂) is not only the new generation of entertainment tycoons, but he is also a charity tycoon in the entertainment industry. With COVID-19 raging in Hong Kong, the Louis Koo Charity Foundation worked hard to source face masks and successfully ordered 1.3 million masks for many of the elderly and disadvantaged groups. Last month, Louis stepped up and gave veteran actress Angelina Lo (盧宛茵) some face masks after learning that she’s been reusing her DIY mask.
In the middle of last month, Angelina’s The Family Squad (卡拉屋企) costar, Joe Tay (鄭敬基) shared on Instagram that Angelia ran out of face masks and relied on a cotton mask wrapped with a piece of toilet paper and plastic wrap to go into TVB. Heartbroken, Joe immediately gave her a new mask.
Afterward, many friends took the initiative to contact Angelina and offer her masks. Among them, Louis immediately contacted her through his assistant to offer his condolences and ask if she needed masks. “I said I didn’t need masks for the time being, so he might as well give the supplies to other elderly people in need,” Angelina shared.
Still, Louis instructed his assistant to bring the masks to her house and teach Angelina how to wear them properly. The actress praised Louis for his empathy and respect for elders. She hopes that he can stay as the president for the Hong Kong Performing Artistes’ Guild.
In 1994, the duo collaborated on the drama, Happy Harmony <餐餐有宋家>, in which they played mother-and-son. “At the time, I felt this young lad was very thoughtful,” Angelina recalled. “Whenever he took a break on set, he would ask, ‘Mom, what do you want to eat?’ And he would drive me home or to the nearest subway station after work.”
In addition to assisting seniors, Louis also instructed his employees to contact different charitable and religious groups to distribute masks to various communities during this time, especially those with disabilities and families with special needs.
According to media reports, Louis also paid attention to the needs of scavengers. He contacted multiple agencies but failed to reach an agency dedicated to scavengers. He ended up asking his friends to find them.
Moreover, even though the recent pandemic has negatively impacted Hong Kong’s economy, he still insists that the employees of his restaurant have paid holidays.
