Michelle Chen Loses Money as She Faces Declining Popularity

Taiwanese actress Michelle Chen (陳妍希) shot to fame following her leading performance in 2011’s You Are the Apple of My Eye <那些年,我們一起追的女孩>, breaking box office records in Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2013, after starring as Little Dragon Girl in the Chinese wuxia drama The Romance of the Condor Heroes <神鵰俠侶>, she fell in love with her costar Chen Xiao (陳曉), and the two tied the knot in 2016. Michelle gave birth to their son “Xiao Xingxing” later that year.

Since their son’s birth, Michelle’s work output had slowed down significantly. She only appeared on one film since 2017. Her popularity suffered as a result, and according to a source, a makeup brand which originally paid her NT$4.5 million has now reduced her contract renewal to NT$2.5 million due to the brands inability to meet its projected sales mark.

In an attempt to increase her popularity and relevance, it is said that Michelle plans on teaming up with her husband, Chen Xiao, to film a new reality show. Family-centered reality shows, such as Where Are We Going, Dad? <爸爸去哪兒> and Meeting Mr. Right <女兒們的戀愛> have always been profitable for celebrities in China.

Michelle will also appear on an upcoming Chinese variety show Sheng Feng Po Lang De Jie Jie Men <乘風破浪的姐姐們> (literally “Sisters Who Ride the Wind and Break the Waves”), but a cast list reveal on May 5th showed that Michelle will not be a regular on the show.
