Moses Chan, Eddie Cheung Perform in Wuhan Despite Pneumonia Outbreak

An unidentified virus targeting the lungs had surfaced in Wuhan, inflicting over 40 people and causing them to develop pneumonia-like symptoms. Reminiscent of the SARS that happened in southern China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and even Canada in 2003, travelers to Wuhan were advised to be cautious, especially travelers from Hong Kong.

But for Moses Chan (陳豪) and Eddie Cheung (張兆輝), who had accepted invitations to perform at a New Year Eve’s Gala in Wuhan months before the outbreak, they had no choice but to continue on with the program. Fortunately, both actors took extra precautions during their trip there, and returned home safely and healthily.

Eddie said he was suffering from a cold on his way to Wuhan, and he had prepped himself by taking a lot of vitamin C. On his flight back to Hong Kong, he was the only person wearing a mouth mask. When he returned home, he took a thorough shower before entering his bedroom.

“I feel fine right now, so that’s a good sign,” he said. “I have to promote my new show Of Greed and Ants <黃金有罪> soon, so I cannot be sick!”

In Wuhan, Eddie told organizers that he didn’t want to eat barbecue and seafood as a precaution. “They did introduce me to a really popular restaurant, and I tried their famous salted meat and intestines.”

During his performance, Eddie did go off stage to shake hands with the fans. Asking if he was concerned about getting sick, he said, “I had accepted the job two months before. I didn’t want to turn it down and be at risk of losing money.” Asking if his family had tried to convince him to stay in Hong Kong, he said, “They don’t really know what’s going on, so they didn’t. But the news is spreading fast. Even Lawrence Ng (吳啟華), who is working in the Mainland, sent me a message telling me to be safe. I am grateful for the concerns from everyone!”

Moses, who has three young children with the oldest being only six, said he took extra precautions when he returned home. “I took a long shower and changed into new clothes before entering the house. (Did you quarantine yourself?) There’s no need for that. (Was there tension when you were in Wuhan?) Just normal life there. The situation is exaggerated by the Hong Kong media, but I did take my precautious. I wore a mouth mask and washed my hands a lot! (Did you leave your hotel?) No. I stayed put and ate food at the hotel. It’s safer that way.
