“Mulan” to Release Theatrically in Asia
Originally scheduled to release in North American cinemas in March, Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan was postponed several times due to COVID-19. As uncertainty over the pandemic looms, Disney revised its plans and the film will only see a limited theatrical release in Asia.
As many countries in the world still struggle to curb new virus infections and movie theaters remain shuttered, Mulan will be streamed on its subscription service Disney+ for $30 US dollars in September. This is the first movie to cost a premium fee on the streaming service, which is currently available in North America and parts of Europe, and many people are hesitant to pay the price along with the monthly subscription fee in order to see Mulan.
Since the movie features Liu Yifei (刘亦菲), Gong Li (巩俐), Donnie Yen (甄子丹), and Jet Li (李連杰), who are big stars in Asia, Disney decided to release Mulan in movie theaters in China, Taiwan, and Japan in September.
Mulan was heavily marketed and despite the milestone of an all-Asian cast in a major Hollywood movie, many fans are disappointed it will only have a limited theatrical release, which will not have the same impact as a global release.

I guess Japan isn’t streaming this as it will be in North America and Europe. So far, India and Japan are the only Asian countries with Disney + available.
Disney+ is great to see ALL their films, especially the oldies! But there is so much noise about the extra hefty $30 FEE to watch Mulan. (For a family of four, it’s not a bad deal at all!)
Also, since one gets to keep the movie in the line up, as long as the account is current, one can watch it over and over again!! My friend even suggested that I charge $5 per head to watch at my house afterwards! (Popcorn not included) LOL Hmmmmmm….. Food for thought!??
Eh…wonder how well this will do in Asia $ wise…
