Wang Yibo Rumored to Star in New “Journey to the West” Remake

Broadcasting station China Central Television (CCTV) recently announced its plan to produce an adaptation of Journey to the West <西遊記>. The drama is slated to begin filming in the first quarter of 2027 and is expected to run 27 episodes with a massive investment of 500 million Chinese yuan. The drama will film at the famous Flaming Mountains, Yulin Caves, and even the ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara. The production team will allegedly be collaborating with the Chinese Academy of Sciences on special effects.

With such a large-scale production, curiosity on casting decisions is at the forefront of the audience’s mind. The iconic Monkey King will be selected through an open audition targeting opera-trained performers. The humorous Pigsy is expected to be portrayed by a comedic actor, and the loyal Sandy may be portrayed by an actor with strong martial arts skills.

Although casting has not been officially announced yet, rumors are swirling that Chinese actor Wang Yibo (王一博) is being considered for the role of the monk, Tang Sanzang. Speculative fans are praising how Wang Yibo’s cool, refined looks is fitting for the monk’s serene image.

While many are excited, others worry about the risks of remaking such a beloved classic, saying they feel both excited and afraid.
