Fala Chen Reflects on Critical Acclaim for “Peg O’ My Heart”

Fala Chen (陳法拉) was nominated for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the first time. Nominated for her role in Peg O’ My Heart (贖夢), Fala competed against esteemed actresses like Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), Fish Liew (廖子妤), Ma Li (馬麗), and Natalie Hsu (許恩怡). The award eventually went to Fish Liew for her performance in Someone Like Me <像我這樣的愛情>.

Ending her contract with TVB in 2014 to pursue a master’s degree at Juilliard and trying her luck in Hollywood, Peg O’ My Heart marked Fala’s return to Hong Kong entertainment after a decade-long hiatus. She starred alongside Nick Cheung (張家輝) and Terrance Lau (劉俊謙) in the psychological thriller film.

Reflecting on the Best Actress nomination, Fala shared, I’m very grateful for the support from the audience and industry peers. It proves that everyone hasn’t forgotten me, and I’m truly thankful.” Facing tough competition for the prestigious award, Fala candidly expressed, When I performed, I came in fully prepared, with trust in the script and the director. I acted with a very clear and precise sense of confidence.

Fala highlighted how working closely with Nick, who both wrote and directed the film, helped her understand the character deeply. Still, she kept expectations grounded: I’m confident in my performance, but whether I win an award is beyond my control.”

In Peg O’ My Heart, Fala underwent a dramatic transformation, appearing in deliberately unglamorous makeup while portraying a mentally unstable character. She joked, Finally, someone cast me to play myself,” before adding more seriously that the role’s wide emotional range was what drew her in. “The uglier and crazier I got, the became happier.”

Looking ahead, Fala hopes to take on more Hong Kong film projects, although family commitments limit long shoots.
