The 44th Hong Kong Film Awards was successfully held last night, 19 April. Fala Chen (陳法拉)’s nomination for “Best Actress” at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her role in Peg O’ My Heart <贖夢>, is her first-ever at the Hong Kong Film Awards since entering the industry.

Commenting about her choice of attire – a white satin long dress designed by Artistic Director Matthieu Blazy, paired with CHANEL footwear, Fala said: “I feel that choosing clothes and jewelery is also a matter of fate. It’s the same as encountering a good role, a role that suits you, or the people and events in your life — it all comes down to chance,”

As it has been ten years since she last filmed a Hong Kong production, Fala felt deeply touched to receive a nomination upon her first return to Hong Kong cinema She said, “It feels like the audience has not forgotten Fala. I’m also very moved by the support and encouragement from colleagues and peers in the industry…I’ll get to see many familiar colleagues and friends, and everyone comes together to celebrate film. So I’m really looking forward to taking part,”

Wants to Do Comedy with Nick Cheung

Fala also expressed gratefulness to director Nick Cheung, as “everything (about her role) had came from the latter, and revealed that Nick Cheung had asked whether she would be interested in collaborating again.

“I don’t know whether he’s thinking of making Peg O’ My Heart 2, with the two of us playing husband and wife again, or whether he has a new idea. Actually, I’m really looking forward to him making a comedy. I’d also really like to do comedy. I do have confidence that I can take on comedic roles — it’s just that no one has approached me for them. So I hope I can act in a comedy with Nick Cheung,”

As for whether her role in the horror thriller was “crazy” enough, Fala said, “It’s not really about whether it was crazy enough or not. In the world of this character, she doesn’t think she’s crazy. She believes she is simply doing what is normal to her. So the starting point was not to act out a state of madness, but to portray her distorted logic and what she needed to do in each moment. This role was very different from the roles I’ve played in the past. In fact, I felt very natural and enjoyed it while acting. But I do feel that my boundaries could be pushed further — not necessarily in terms of being ‘crazy’, but in terms of expanding the range even more. I would very much welcome that.”

Unearthing Her Own Passion for Directing

Sharing her future work plans, Fala said she will be joining a film production in two weeks’ time, shooting in Europe on a film which includes elements of action, which she is keenly looking forward to, especially since both the director and cast are people she has never worked with before.

Aside from wanting to act in comedies, Fala also expressed her interest in directing, which she greatly enjoys. “I’ve just completed post-production on my own short film. Moving forward, I will develop this short film into a feature-length film. I hope to continue both roles in the future — as an actress and as a director.”
