“Story of Yanxi Palace” Actress Refuses to Leave Red Carpet at Cannes Film Festival

The 72nd Cannes Film Festival started yesterday and actress Shi Yanfei (施予斐) took part in the red carpet opening ceremony. The actress is most known for her portrayal as the empress’ personal maid in The Story of Yanxi Palace (延禧攻略). Netizens also discovered that she has previously had roles in Hollywood production, Empires of the Deep, which would explain her appearance on the red carpet.

However as Shi Yanfei took to the red carpet, a female bodyguard approached her and appeared to try persuade her to leave. Shi Yanfei did not leave immediately but continued to pose for photographers. Many netizens commented afterwards, “Refusing to leave the red carpet, what an embarrassment!”

Shi Yanfei immediately took to Weibo to defend herself, “I believe every actor/actress that has the opportunity to walk the Cannes red carpet will be extremely nervous and excited; I am not immune to this. There were many media outlets from different countries that day. It was extremely loud, and the foreign media was very passionate. They kept yelling for more photos. When the staff came up to me, I could not hear a single word she said. Until now, I am not even sure if I was being ushered off or not.”

Shi Yanfei’s incident at Cannes became a trending topic on social media today. Some netizens were not convinced stating that Shi Yanfei was an embarrassment and did not deserve to be there. Others were more understanding stating that she is an actress and has been working hard, there is no right for others to be jealous. Shi Yanfei continued to defend herself on Weibo stating that she was just walking the red carpet, “How can you just look at a photo and assume that I was refusing to leave?!”

Other Asian celebrities who attended the Cannes Film Festival were Gong Li (鞏俐), Li Yuchun (李宇春), Jing Tian (景甜), Hannah Quinlivan, former Girls Generation member Jessica Jung, and Thai actress Araya Alberta Hargate (also known as Chompoo).

  1. Wow Jing Tian also? What notable works does she have to go to Cannes? Wasn’t she getting bad reviews and called box office poison for the longest time?

  2. She’s probably a well hated person, especially with the villian role she played.

Not sure how these red carpet things work exactly. I feel the C-actress isn’t notable and shouldn’t have been invited, or register herself and do whatever to walk on the show.
But how come none of the articles care to explain if she was invited or registered to come in the first place?
Because if she was invited, then of course like how she said it is also correct, who would expect to show up and be asked to leave? And during the time of being asked to leave, the lady telling her is white, so does this C-actress understand english? It’s also not un-believable about the crowd being too loud. The article should explain why she was asked to leave.
From that picture the C-actress looks like she didn’t pay any attention to the white lady at all, but it’s still only one picture, I can’t judge it because it’s not the whole footage.

If the C-actress really came uninvited then I would say she is a total embarrassment. But if she was actually invited or approved to come, that’s a total different story to me, the reason asking her to leave should be valid otherwise that’s just bullying to kick her out in front of the crowd instead of doing it from the entrance at least.
