Whitney Does Not Get Along with Colleagues

Is Whitney Hui‘s (許亦妮) diva attitude hindering her career advancement? The 25-year-old made her debut in the industry through the 2011 Miss Hong Kong Pageant. Whitney’s recognition levels shot up after achieving favorable reviews in her portrayal of the sassy Monica D. in the comedy drama Inbound Troubles <老表,你好嘢!>, and peaked again when she was cast as the main lead in nightclub film Lan Kwai Fong 3 <喜愛夜蒲3>.

However, Whitney’s alleged diva ways resulted in her being dropped from Inbound Troubles 2 <老表,你好Hea!> due to her discord with the cast and crew. She also reportedly did not get along with her costars in Lan Kwai Fong 3 either.

Whitney’s diva-esque was again apparent on June 30, when the cast of the TVB variety show Street Sorcerers 2 <街頭魔法王2> were shooting on location in Mong Kok. Bob Lam (林盛斌) warmly greeted the press and Oscar Leung (梁烈唯) also asked if they were thirsty, offering them drinks. Whitney, on the other hand, immediately turned to the side and shot the reporters a dark glare.

Whitney hid her face behind her cell phone and snapped photos of the reporters on set. Seeing that the reporters were still not leaving, Whitney asked a staff member to shoo them away. “What media company are you guys from? You cannot conduct interviews or take photos here. Please leave,” the staff member said. The reporters retorted that since the cast were filming in a public area, they should be allowed to take photos as long as they do not interfere with the shooting process. After discussing this with the show’s director, the staff allowed the reporters to stay. Whitney looked disappointed and tried to hide behind a staff member throughout the shoot to avoid the reporters.

Whitney is a Hassle to Work With

A TVB insider disclosed that Whitney was never popular with her costars and staff. The insider claimed that Whitney often displayed diva behavior on set, demanding the staff to treat her like a first-line fadan.

“She is known for being a hassle,” the insider said. “She always wants her makeup to be done first. When the makeup is too heavy she’ll complain; when it’s too light she’ll also complain. The stylists are also afraid of her. She’ll complain about how the clothes don’t match her or that the outfit smells funny. Not even Liza Wang (汪明荃) has that kind of attitude. Maybe if she was a first line actress, we’ll suck it in, but she isn’t. She’s only a third-line celebrity. It’s hard to stand her.” The insider also confirmed that the reason why she was dropped from Inbound Troubles 2 was because the cast and crew did not want to work with her.

In regards to Whitney’s alleged diva attitude, Whitney’s Lan Kwai Fong 3 costar, Jeana Ho (何佩瑜), said, “After filming the movie we no longer remained in contact. I do not find any reason for us to meet up. She is quite a character…no one can stop her!” Ava Yu (雨僑), however, had better things to say about Whitney. “She didn’t give me problems or an attitude. Maybe it’s because she’s rather introverted. She tends to keep to herself and is not very good at expressing herself.”

  1. Sorry, I am not from HK and does not know its celebrities.

From what I know, Liza Wang is only a TVB actress and has never acted in movies. Neither is she a famous singer or Asian movie queen. So what is so great about this has-been oldie whom I know sounds like a “chicken” when she speaks.

I have surfed the internet and watched internet movies of HK’s heyday actresses, especially Chan Po Chu and those who acted with her (eg. Lydia Sum and Siu Fong Fong). I find present HK actresses cannot act and sing (be it modern songs or Cantonese opera).

And I have only watched Charmaine Sheh in one drama episode and switched tv channels – her acting and voice are a turn-off.

Correct me if I am wrong. Just my observation. God Bless. 🙂

    1. Your opinion is based on very limited observations and it is apparent you make judgments quickly.

There’s no correction possible to opinions anyway. Just stick to what you like. You don’t need someone to randomly tell you how to change your taste.

  2. To MoonDoggy,
Liza Wang is a veteran actress and she is a very serious actress. She has never left tvb whereas lydia sum left tvb before from what I understand.

You were right that most of the current actress/actors in HongKong is nothing great. Those days most of them can act, dance, can sing, I guess those days the expectations were higher. These days it’s more of you’ve a nice face or you’ve connections with someone from the tv station. It’s nothing great which I agree.

Charmaine sheh’s acting is okay to me, I still prefer Dodo Cheng for example. Voice is born, we cant change that though.

    1. Hi Bloom,
      Thanks for your reply.

Yes, Dodo Cheng is good for comedy whereas Liza Wang is not and never has been. Dodo Cheng’s weakness is that she cannot sing. Liza Wang’s weakness is that she wants to be in the limelight.

I saw the internet interviews with former Asian move queen Chan Po Chu who when asked to return to acting, commented, “Let’s leave the acting to the young people”.

Just for info, I watched Chan Po Chu’s movies from internet (linked to big tv screen) and did not like her at first because she was such a tomboy and acted in guy’s roles.

Then I watched her first feminine role, acting sweet and demure with her long hair and gentle voice. I was like, “Wow! This actress can really act and sing guy and gal’s voices”. I am not a Cantonese but loves her rendition of Patriotic Princess, singing in guy and gal’s role, in one of the movies.

Not all people can change their voices but Chan Po Chu did that for the operas and acting in ancient movie roles.

Just as a digression, when I sing, I can change the tone and volume of my voice – hitting the high notes (like a tenor) or
singing softly as well as imitating Western singers voices (past singers as I find present day songs not meaningful). Just singing for love of singing and when worshipping God.

      God Bless. 🙂

      1. How does one go from the topic of a d-list HK actress to one’s own singing capabilities? Self-centred and likes to talk about God. Wow, what a winning combination.

      2. C9, i agree with you completely.
yes,i wonder too, why are we on her/his singing abilities now. Talk about strange.

      3. To MoonDoggy,
I think Liza Wang wont be retiring as I feel she’s enjoying acting. I think I can get what you meant by Liza Wang’s acting is a little exaggerating. These days yes, but you may want to google some old dramas that she acted. When she was young her voice is not likes this. It was much better, her voice changed to the worst now.

Chan Poh Chu is one of the veterans. Yes, she’s elegant looking and acts well.

      4. Sorry to netizens if my comments sound off-key. What I mean to say is that some people can change their voices and its volume when singing, that’s all. Not self-praising or anything like this.

        Bloom, thanks for your replies.
I am not Cantonese or from HK but I do like some of the Cantonese operas that I find on the internet – especially older actors and actresses like Lam Kar Seng and Chan Po Chu. It’s a dying art and it’s an experience to hear them singing so well and with hands, legs and facial movements.

        God Bless. 🙂

  3. Whitney is burning her bridges fast…So it is better to give Coffee Lam another chance to take her place who is more personable to male staffers at least. LOL

    1. i concur. thought whitney should be better at handling these type of PR issues and treating people better.

  4. Perhaps Whitney’s diva attitude is because at least one male TVB staffer likes her?

  5. yeah she does sound like an introvert. it’s gonna be tough for her to be a true actress like this. seems like most actor/actress are successful because they are extrovert and can easy express themselves, make everyone like them, and admire them even from far away. even if she have potential talent, she’s not going anywhere.

    1. Interesting how you say extroverted artists are more successful because they can express. I actually think the opposite and the more introverted ones are more able to express their feelings onscreen because it’s an emotional outlet for them whereas extroverts are probably more talkers. I see examples like this from Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Wayne Lai, Ruco Chan, etc. I believe extroverts are probably more likable (like you said) but that’s in real life. Unless you meant to say extroverted characters onscreen are more likable, then I agree.

  6. she is better off having some kind of gathering with a rich heir…

  7. Whitney Hui is pretty and can act, but she needs to change her diva attitudes if she wants to excel and be accepted.

  8. I never thought of Whitney as an introvert mainly because she appeared to be a party girl and seen many main prior to her joining the pageant. Always thought she wasn’t afraid of people that kind of type.

But if these rumors are true and she’s being a diva when she’s only a third-line celebrity, she will only destroy whatever opportunities she still has left in the industry. Most TVB actresses, whether first-line or third-line seems to not have these types of rumors except for Fala, as I remember. There’s no reason the staff should put up with her since everyone is just doing their part of the work. Also, Whitney can probably use some brightening up as HK reporters are infamous for being annoying anyway. It’s not like they caught her doing something inappropriate in public even so there’s really no reasons she needs to shoo them away and look disappointed. I still look forward to seeing her in the future though and hopefully she can come to the realization and make some personality adjustments for her career’s sake.

  9. She was dropped from Inbound Troubles 2? But she has a part in Gilded Chopsticks..Her acting is quite okay I think. She needs to change her attitude and be more humble, if the reports were true.

  10. Not surprised at all by this. Even when she was competing in miss HK there were negative reports/rumours about her attitude.

    1. wow, you remember from this long. remember there were negative presses like she was a gold digger but can’t recall about her attitude. however it could all be related, gold digging and bad attitude. not need to work when she finds a sugar daddy so who cares all the crap she gives to people.

  11. Those ppl who thinks they’re more superior and thus have “diva” attitude wont last long. You just pissed off everyone and who wants to give you chance especially in this kind of industry. Always be humble, if you’re good, ppl would be able to tell it immediately. Why show off? Really dont understand these ppl.
