Joe Chen, Ming Dao’s “Beauties of the Emperor” to be Rebroadcast October 14

Fans of the historical drama Beauties of the Emperor <王的女人> will get a chance to catch the series on television again, along with the drama’s star-studded lineup of Joe Chen (陳喬恩), Ming Dao (明道), Luo Jin (羅晉), and Yuan Shanshan (袁姗姗). After its initial broadcast in mainland China in late 2012, as well as a run on Taiwan Television earlier this year, Beauties of the Emperor will be airing again on October 14.

Set during the time of the Chu-Han Contention, Beauties of the Emperor stars Joe Chen as Lü Le, who later becomes the Han Empress Lü Zhi. At the beginning of the story, which starts when Lü Le is a young girl, she befriends another young girl named Miao Ge (Yuan Shanshan), whose parents had both died. Lü Le convinces her family to adopt Miao Ge, and the girls become steadfast friends who never keep secrets from one another.

However, their tight-knit friendship and comfortable lives fall apart when a man known as Yun Kuang (Ming Dao) enters the picture. The future Chu Emperor Xiang Yu, Yun Kuang becomes the object of affection of both Lü Le and Miao Ge, who must decide whether love is worth the destruction of their friendship.

Beauties of the Emperor marks the second time that Joe and Shanshan have portrayed romantic rivals after their collaboration in Swordman <笑傲江湖>, which, like Beauties of the Emperor, was also produced by Yu Zheng (于正). This drama also offers the actresses a chance to step out of their comfort zones: Joe, who tends to be carefree and casual in real life, is tackling a more melancholy and meticulously minded character. Likewise, Shanshan portrayed more positive roles in the past, but Miao Ge, who becomes the famous Chu Concubine Yu Ji, is a decidedly villainous character in this series.

As implied by the name, Beauties of the Emperor also includes many other female characters, portrayed by beauties like mainland Chinese actresses Yang Rong (楊蓉), Hu Jing (胡静), Tong Liya (佟麗婭), and singer/actress Kym (金莎).
