New TVB series, Highs and Lows <雷霆掃毒> is the talk of the town, pushing up Kate Tsui’s (徐子珊) popularity and chances to win the TV Queen award.
In the drama, Kate’s character, “Pat Chan,” works in a bar in order to take care of her sick and beloved younger brother. Working in this rough environment, she faces many difficult situations and encounters the dregs of society. Kate has many crying scenes, but her struggles make her character become stronger and tougher.
A Filial Daughter
Outside of her tough “Drug Queen” onscreen persona, Kate is very family oriented. She has had a great relationship with her family since she was a child. Although everyone in the family is busy and has little time to see each other, they still remain very close. Kate’s parents and her elder sister currently live in three different places: mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Once Kate has free time, she will fly there and spend time with her family.
Separated in three different places and due to their busy work schedules, Kate hardly sees her family. Sometime her mother will visit her in Hong Kong. This time, Kate’s sister went on a business trip and needed her mother to take of care her daughter. Therefore, during Mid-Autumn Festival, Kate requested a few days off to spend time with her mother and her niece in Taiwan.
Kate always plays a very tough characters in many of her series, but she honestly has a fragile side of her. If she could change herself, she wants to become more gentle and dependent on others to take care of her.
Many Hong Kong artists have opportunities to make good sums of money to film TV series in mainland China. Kate has already established a name for herself, and had plans to film a mainland drama. She was actually scheduled to film a TV series there during the Mid-Autumn Festival, but luckily the filming date was postponed. Kate took advantage of date change, and went to visit her family in Taiwan.
As for filming movies, Kate works very hard and recently completed movie, Buddy Cops <神獸巴打>. She will be filming a mainland horror movie next, and will continue to pursue both her TV and film careers simultaneously.
The year-end TVB award ceremony is coming up in less than two months. Kate’s performance in Highs and Lows is well accepted and praised by the viewers. The drama has a large following and Kate’s role is a breakthrough performance for her.
When asked about the Anniversary awards, Kate said that awards usually indicate the success of the actor, especially this year’s newly implemented audience voting system to select the TV King and Queen. The results will be fair and not produce controversy. However for Kate, she is already satisfied by being nominated.

Cleavage always there. Her face seems fuller, lips less pouty. Just something quite off of her face from her old self. Maybe she toned down her make up, her poutiness or made her face fuller for a less vixen look.

You seriously do not know if it is make up only or if there is PS involved unless they openly admit it. The lighting and air brushing of photos also makes a big difference as well.

It’s the make-up. No nude lipgloss nor crazy false eyelashes. And, white tends to brighten your complexion.

Hong Kong makeup celebrity artists should take some tips from Korean stars makeup styles. Their overuse of bb cream can help hide down the celebs skin well.

^ lol, it’s originally a cream, which helps to reduce scars, etc. Cosmetics company then turned it into a foundation kind of thing bc it can be a multi-function product.

Me too ! I enjoy their chemistry, that I think they might make a good couple, I’ve never really thought there would be anyone that “good” to be with Raymond.

Kate can create chemistry with anyone. She created an unforgettable pairing last year with Paris and Baico and this year will create another epic pairing with Pat and Happy Sir!

I find it interesting that so many people have commented on Ray and Kate’s chemistry in HAL. I remember their chemistry being next to nil in The Four.

I haven’t watched HAL yet but kate’s character does sounds intriguing and full of dramatic instances. The character sounds better than Tavia’s character in SSSS.

Kate’s acting in High and Low is much better than Tavia’s acting in On Call 36 H and 3K. Kate is more deserving and Kate has viewers majority support now. OMO.
TVB keep giving Tavia chance to get BA but she keep blowing her chances with her stagnant and lacklustre acting.
It’s not about how many chances you have. Kate can do it with only one series.It’s all about quality.

Well Tavia didn’t do well in THC and did awful in 3K. She blew her own chances to get the BA award. From all the current news Kate is the audience’s choice now.

I highly doubt Kate’s performance is even remotely comparable to Sheren for RB. Sheren was phenomenal as always – but Tavia was a total dud. More than usual. So there’s a very high level of discrepancy between 2009 and this year. Right now we only have Kate’s performance, but nothing to compare it to. Tavia is opposite Damian this time, so I expect some improvements in her acting because a good costar, like a vet can elevate the younger star’s performance. I suspect this is just the TVB hype machine blowing smoke to hype up the awards.
If Tavia does well in SSSS she will get her applause but if she disappoints, it will be a meaningless award.
We don’t know how tavia will act in SSSS though. Although I think her acting is better than kate, but she is so boring, and I really don’t want to watch her nose. It looked terrible in the trailers.

It is not about the drama. TY does not have good and challenging roles for her 3 dramas this year. Other than SSSS which has not been showed yet. We should compare apple to apple and not apple to orange. If TY is to replace KT in HAL, she might do better than her or on par.

Congrats to Kate! She outshined even Raymond Lam and Michael Miu and stole the show in High and Low which is supposed to be a male series to promote Raymond Lam.
I only watched up to episode 4 and Kate is doing fine and is the best actress in the series.
I don’t know what happened to Ella Koon. Her acting get worse than before and is more annoying than Kate. Raymond Lam also can do better and doesn’t give much outstanding moment for a supposed to be custom made role for him to get TV King.
Interesting to hear Kate overshadowed Tavia and everyone in HAL. Who would’ve expect that Kate is the one who can overshadow others?

Same here I thought Ella was really good in RDOV and Survivor Law 2 but she’s annoying and just bad acting in here. Elaine is horrific bad too. Sorry to their fans too.

I thought Kate improved but to be honest I think her character stands out more than the acting. She constantly just looks sad, looks pissed, or cries (which I still think needs improvement). Her character is interesting, not necessarily her acting.
TVB is considering to give her the award simply because tavia ruined her image recently with the incident in Him’s car. Practically speaking, TVB gives award to whoever has the squeeky clean image to those they favor (eg. LF). So, since few years ago i’ve stop watching the ceremony cause it is simply a show TVB put on for themselves.

Funny how prior to the airing of Beyond the Realm of Conscience, the general consensus seemed to be that Tavia was a talented and underrated actress. Many people were hoping TVB would promote her more etc, but that sentiment has changed in recent years.
