“Spying”, Starring Xiao Zhan, Gains Buzz

Xiao Zhan’s (肖戰) career continues to soar after the success of The Legend of Zang Hai <藏海傳> with Zhang Jingyi (張婧儀), as well as his recent win at the 33rd Beijing College Student Film Festival, where he received the “Most Popular Actor of the Year Among University Students” award for Gezhi Town <得閒謹制>.

His upcoming drama Spying <諜報上不封頂>, co-starring Zhou Yutong (周雨彤), is reportedly set to premiere in June. The trailer has already surpassed 43.68 million views, while Xiao Zhan’s five spy-themed looks have earned him the nickname “Eastern version of 007”.

In the drama, Xiao Zhan plays secret agent Ren Shaobai, with his revealed outfits ranging from sharp suits and vintage vests to silver- and gold-rimmed glasses, giving off a sleek, intelligent and mysterious spy image.

The cast has also drawn attention, with Lin Boyang (林博洋) from The Blood of Youth <少年歌行> playing a new-generation agent, and Shen Jiayu (沈佳鈺) from Our Generation <櫻桃琥珀> appearing as the young girl Zhu Yanjun. Both actresses are expected to bring fresh energy to the series.

Set in 1948 before the Huaihai Campaign, Spying follows Communist underground member Ren Shaobai as he infiltrates the Kuomintang Ministry of National Defence and gathers military intelligence from within. Along the way, he meets Lan Youyin, played by Zhou Yutong, a widowed mathematical genius who initially seeks revenge after her husband’s death.

As Lan Youyin begins using her mathematical skills to assist Ren Shaobai on his missions, their relationship gradually shifts from opposition to cooperation. Together, they overcome danger and challenges while moving towards their shared goal.
