Kevin Cheng On Opening His Own Production Studio: “There’s Zero Risk!”

Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎) has recently added production studio founder to his resume.

Investing money in his own production studio in mainland China, Kevin is currently working with his team of scriptwriters to develop a script for his first television drama. Only now does he realize that the process from start to finish in making a series is so tedious. After coming up with the original premise of the script, Kevin asked his scriptwriters to develop a script. “After countless revisions, now then we are finally in the midst of choosing the final copy.”

The operation of the studio is not an easy task for Kevin who has always been on the forefront of a television show. Nonetheless, he takes it all in stride and enjoys working with his staff.  “The studio is the start of another aspect of my career. It is not going to be easy as this is new to me but I’ll just enjoy the process as I go. I have confidence in this investment as the risk is almost zero. I hope to be able to establish a good brand and achieve high ratings!”

Debt of Gratitude to Others

Pouring all his savings into the investment, Kevin was left with the need to carefully budget pay for the actors. No doubt his popularity had helped him pull a few strings. He said sheepishly, “I realize that actors’ wages take up the most portion of a film’s expenses. I must thank my actors who have agreed to accept a nominal fee; I owe them so much!”

With almost everything in place: the soon-to-be completed script, a set director, and actors from both China and Hong Kong all chosen, Kevin’s debut show is all ready to be put into action!

No matter how busy Kevin is at the studio, he still sets aside time to record for his new album, to be released in fall 2013. Now with so much work filling his mind, he hardly has time to go on a date. He said, “Ideally, I want to get married and have two children. But I have yet to meet someone suitable.”

Refuses to Respond to Lee Lik Chi’s Criticism

Hong Kong director, Lee Lik Chi (李力持), had openly criticized Kevin’s poor Mandarin skills and questioned whether the TV King was worth his reported astronomical filming fees in China.

Although Kevin was in France when the media interviewed director Lee Lik Chi, news spread fast and reached Kevin. He chose not to retaliate and only admitted, “I did read Director Lee’s script and rejected it,” leaving readers to make their own conclusion. However, an insider source revealed that Kevin’s current market value was well beyond 300,000 RMB per episode.

  1. I don’t know, why would someone like Kevin get paid more than the likes of Wu Xiubo, Hu Jun, etc? It doesn’t add up for me.

      1. you’ll probably be even more shock by how much korean actors/actresses get paid in mainland

      2. @ lol, the thing is that we never hear the figures from the horse’s mouth. How much do they get paid?

      3. I’m Chinese and I am sick and tired of having Korean actors play lead roles in Chinese dramas. Not to mention there’s language barrier existed. If Kevin ever produces any drama, I hope he won’t do the same thing.

      4. Life is not fair and salaries are not fair, that is normal…

    1. Correct. I prefer those cast spaeking their own languages, no dubbing, etc. It brings down the whole movie. It just sucks! Isn’t it more tedious?? Perhaps they think it can bring more rating. Those korean series that my country airing, they dubbed to chinese. It is sooo aweful! I don’t mind if they js air them in korean and put subtitle!

      1. not everyone like subtitles..
also whether the cast is Chinese or not, mainland Chinese dramas are always dubbed.

  2. Money goes to the hottest artist drawing the most ratings…Since Kevin is seen on TV and now the big screen, his appeal is greater than those appearing in one only…

    1. What has he been in after BBJX that’s been a hit to justify the price tag? I think it’s just posturing by his team to inflate his value.

      1. Come to think of it, what have the actors/actresses post BBJX been in that’s worth the added popularity?

  3. I wonder which friends he’s going to ask to take part in this. I know that Myolie will most likely film this but I wonder if he will get any of his other good friends like Ben Wong or his Iron Horse siblings (Kenneth, Jazz, Natalie)?

      1. Yeah! Invite Charmaine! Not only do they have chemistry, the papparazzi can help with publicity!

    1. Ummmm I’m still waiting for Kevin and myolie to hook up hahahah

  4. wish Kevin all the best for his own production, always support Kevin 🙂

  5. I too fully support Kevin in all his endeavours and wish him success. He has worked hard and not aquandered whatever he has earned and has, in fact, poured all of it into his recent investment. I really didn’t think he would reply to Mr. Lee’s recent criticism of him (that he didn’t deserve getting paid so much for his acting, and his poor Mandarin language). I hope he remains a true gentleman and a professional in all circumstances.

    1. Me too. He has worked hard, from the bottoms up so to speak. VL likes him and so what, all artists are favoured in one way or another but the good thing is, he’s still humble in a way cause he never forget the tough times.

Putting all his current savings into this company is a little risky but he’s a grown man and am sure knows what he wants because no matter how good looking one is, can’t stay young forever.

Like Nicky (who also enjoys hottest popularity since BBJX), both Nicky and Kev’s fees have multiplied many times. It’s the common factor of supply and demand. Yes, he needs to improve his mandarin but even Nicky was dubbed in BBJX and he speaks good mandarin. It’s mainland’s habit.

I wish Kevin luck and success.

  6. He got the look & talent in singing & acting…Its still not late doing singing now, he can be the next raymond lam or andy lau… heard he drop from ip man2.. but this will give him more time in singing & his own production house… then will bring even more $$$$… he will be one of the highest earning actors in chinese HISTORY

      1. Even Nicky Wu is attending a lot more French/Italian fashion shows because of his high profile. And let’s be honest, both Kevin and Nicky has the look and bodies to see it through.

  7. I wonder too. He did say that at about this time he would be “flying here and there”. what for? Anyway, what a curious lot we are!
